Location, location, location & atmosphere

This hotel just outside Willingeb is situated on the hill. Almost on the ski-track. It is an family-owned hotel, during the ski-season it is crowded with Dutch families with children. The location is top, you drive through a tunnel to teach the hotel. The food is good, water swimming pool a little cold but okay and the old jacuzzi is working & a lot of fun for the kids.

Nice view from traditional restaurant

Avaliou em 26 de fevereiro de 2017

We had a coffee in the restaurant during our walk in the mountains. It offers a great view on the valley. The restaurant itself is a traditional one, with simple interior and standard menu. Service is not used to foreignors, communication is somewhat elementary and not really client orientated.

Excellent hotel!

I stayed here for a short impromptu ski trip, prompted by unusually good spring snow conditions in Willingen and nearby Winterberg. On arrival, I was checked in by a courteous, professional lady who then gave me a full tour of the facilities and showed me my room. The hotel is clean, elegantly furnished and comfortable. It would seem to merit a full four stars rather than its rated three-superior. The hotel is located above the town of Willingen, at the edge of the forest, hence its name. Turns out you have to drive across a ski piste to access the hotel (this was a first for me, I have to admit!), so I was glad I still had winter tires on my car despite it being late in the season, otherwise I wouldn't have made it! :) My room was very spacious and comfortable, with luxurious furnishings, and had a balcony with a view over the valley. The view from the large windows in the dining room is panoramic, almost spectacular, over the valley and the ski pistes. It's just a short walk from the hotel to the nearest ski piste, so I got up early and made "first tracks" - I was literally the first person on the piste! And at the end of the ski day, I could ski back close to the hotel too, so there was no need to take the car to access the Willingen ski area. The hotel has an extensive wellness area, with massages etc. on offer, which I can't comment on since I didn't try them out. The indoor pool looked inviting, but the water was on the cold side, perhaps because there weren't that many guests. So I relaxed in the Jacuzzi instead, which was fine, except it could have been a little warmer, and you had to push a button every three minutes to keep it going! There was convenient access to the parking lot straight from the end of the corridor by the room. Outside, there was a playground for kids, plus a German Shepard, big as a wolf, that I befriended. Still not quite sure if he was a pet or a killer guard dog though! There where also some healthy-looking rabbits in cages - assume these were pets, rather than future dinner! :) I had half board. Breakfast was a fairly extensive buffet, with good local bread, and dinner was served at the table, with the exception of the self-service salad bar. The food was good, although certain dishes were a bit salty for my taste, and some portions could have been a bit bigger. The restaurant staff was very friendly. On checkout, I was presented with a professional printed invoice for tourist tax and drinks, which were reasonably priced. Pro: Very nice hotel, deserves four stars. Scenic location. Very friendly staff. Good price (had about 50% off list via travel agent). Good food. Free wifi. Pool, Jacuzzi, wellness facilities. Great location vis-a-vis the WIllingen ski pistes. Con: Nothing at all with the hotel! Willingen ski area is too small for more than a day or two though, if you're an experienced skier.

Good hotel for families with young children

Avaliou em 15 de janeiro de 2012

We had a great stay at Wald Hotel Willingen. It does what is says on the tin. Nothing more, nothing less. The hotel is located slightly out of town, but provided snow conditions are good, it is very close to one of the lifts. Given you need a car to get around Willingen and from one slope to another I think the location should not be a problem. The views from the diningroom and presumably from some of the rooms too are beautiful, you can see all over the valley and town. I would definitely classify this as a family hotel - there were many kids and young families, and the hotel caters for them well. My sister had a family room for 4, we had a family room for 3. Rooms are comfortable, not too small but not much space to dry ski clothes though. We booked half board and they served children's portions for the kids. Dinner is usually a 4 course affair served at your table, though twice weekly there is a buffet which I thought was quite good. The small bar area is cosy and board games etc are provided. The swimming pool and bubble bath are really a family affair, full of kids and their parents. Lots or space for the children to play outside as well.
