lovely off-season birthday retreat
This is a wonderful guesthouse in a wonderful part of mainland Greece. I traveled with an old friend for our joint birthdays and we hiked, took in some amazing scenery, ate gorgeous food all via our guesthouse host's recommendations. They are so accommodating here and so knowledgeable about the area, and so interested in the guest experience. I can't wait to go back!
No Air Conditioning!
This place is well geared up for the winter. Summer? Not so much. Our room, for two nights (above the front door) had no cross ventilation and only had screens to the top third of the two windows in the room. If you opened the non screened windows you became the flesh eating fantasy of a nasty crew of mosquitos. The favourite place for the resident smokers to sit? Just outside the front door, so the smoke goes right into the room above. So the room is like a sauna at night. I asked for a fan, but they didn’t have one. Unbelievable. The breakfast was nice, but in a room with four opening screened windows all of which were closed both mornings and made the dining room claustrophobic and too hot. The owner was polite and obviously the village is as described elsewhere.
Hope to stay here again!
We stayed here for two nights and loved it. Dilofo is a cute town (without cars) and a good base for exploring the surrounding area. We were able to use the mountain bikes from the guesthouse which was great! The roads are steep but it was a fun way to spend an afternoon instead of driving around in a car. If you're a bit adventurous I would recommend this. Breakfast was good and plentiful. The bread was fresh baked and just smelling it baking was enough to make you hungry! I definitely hope I'll be back here sometime!
A rustic and quiet guesthouse in Zagora
A rustic and quiet guest house in Zagora, Greece. Excellent location in the center of the area, excellent as a base for exploring the surroundings. The hotel is very clean and tidy, in an old renovated and well restored building but the rooms are relatively small. It is important to know: there is no access to the village with vehicles, so arriving at the hotel with suitcases requires some effort, and dinner should be planned outside the village as there is no choice of restaurants in the village. At the same time, the experience of sleeping in a village like this, quiet and traditional, is worth the effort. Breakfast is quite standard and not sufficiently invested. All in all, a very good hotel and very attractive for those looking for peace and quiet, but for a limited number of days - a day or two.
Gem of an Adventure
Driving up to this village was a little bit of a challenge and I even wondered what in the world my husband was thinking of when he selected this place. When we got to a sign that showed we couldn’t drive any further, he remembered being told we needed to park and walk 400 meters. Meanwhile is was late afternoon and we didn’t see any place in the area for dinner. As we started walking, looking for the hotel, a young girl popped out from nowhere and guided us to the place. She was the receptionist and basic do-everything person. She recommended a restaurant a couple of doors down, which we would have never found. It was quirky in decor and music and the food was great. Our room was rustic and beautiful. The bathroom was modern and clean (but we still had to throw the TP in the garbage - guess they have plumbing issues). The bed was comfortable and toiletries basic. Breakfast was supposed to start at 8:30 but we asked if it could be a little earlier and the girl graciously moved it to 8:00. Everything was fresh - breads, cheeses, jams and plenty of local sweets. Overall a charming place that made me feel part of the village. Would have stayed longer if we were staying in the area.
