Best B&B and Pizzeria in Maremma
I've just come back from a brief but wonderful holiday in the Maremma with my wife and two children (4 & 3). Nestled up high in the wild hills of Murci, a sleepy but pretty village up from Scansano, L'Asino Vola is the most charming restaurant and B&B I've yet found in Maremma. We were made to feel immediately at home and part of the local scenery by the owners Tony and Daniela, who have overseen all the details with real style - from the rustic decoration to the expert pizza oven. We were given a huge family room, which our two children loved and we slept very soundly for three nights... We were meant to stay just one, but we prolonged it as we didn't want to leave. The main dining room downstairs has a fantastic warmth and friendliness to it, the other people coming in to eat or stay feel immediately like new friends, rather than just other guests, which is a rarity for B&B's in my experience. The pizzas are the real deal, genuine Neapolitan affairs and perfectly cooked by Enzo. However, we were treated to some spectacular other dishes - slowly braised beef in wine and peppers, salt-baked fresh Mediterranean fish, hand-made tortelloni, vegetable lasagne and grilled sausages with local seasonal vegetables. Not to mention the abundant breakfasts with all the cakes, home-made doughnut twists (called "graf"), eggs etc. So good - we looked forward to all our meals. The icing on the cake was when I mentioned it was my wife's birthday (which happened to coincide with Tony's) and their hospitality went into overdrive with a birthday cake and special bottles of wine brought out. It was like being in a big extended family. Beside that, there's a fun terrace with ping pong, and where in the summer they also do cinema projections - I for one will happily be back for some long evenings there. Murci feels like a well-kept secret... the location is excellent for exploring the wider area, down for a hot bath in Saturnia, down to the beach, or further up into the mountains and the wilderness. It's a very unaffected, unpretentious little village with friendly locals, a few shops, and beautiful views across the valleys. L'Asino Vola seems to sit at the heart of village life, and it's success is testament to the vision and work of Tony and Daniela who have made it into a destination for locals and tourist alike. I'd recommend it to absolutely anyone, and look forward to returning.
The small town Murci has a jewel in the heart of it. This is the restaurant and a B&B, the name in english means The Flying Donkey, it looks very different from the chain of traditionally set restaurants and B&B's, it's tastefully and artistically set up, you can see that the owners of the place are really creative. The place is attractive, we've been in the restaurant several times and every time we enjoyed the atmosphere. People there feel relaxed, often talk to each other through the isles, even share the table with the strangers sometimes, which feels right for some reason. The place is loved by the actors and other bohemians from Rome who have the summer houses in the area. In summer it's often hard to find a seat, so guests even seat at the bus stop bench which makes the atmosphere even more fun. Very recommended to go there if you are in the area.
Consigliato
