We had been there a few years ago noting marked improvements in the physical plant & the addition of some new activities. Facility itself was great, as were the staff with whom we interacted. The food had not changed in the interval years though good the items on the menu need some imagination. Perhaps the idea of a special dish for dinner would work. There were a number of families with younger children on site — I thought how nice it might be to have an “ice cream “ stand available for kids of all ages. We golfed one day on a course comparable to some of the best around, shoot sporting clays on the two courses which require a lot of love to bring it up to the “Bretta Shooting Grounds” on the label. The targets were good but the trails, carts & reception club house need work. We cannot speak to other activities on this visit but have placed a “ maybe” for a return in the future. Great start to improvement but needs to complete the details to raise experience to first class.
Beautiful resort, but service is lacking

My friends and I escaped to Barnsley Resort for the weekend just for the heck of it. Overall the resort and the grounds are beautiful and well-maintained. Our room was very clean and spacious with a large TV, comfortable beds, two closets, and a big bathroom with two sinks and a separate room for the toilet. The food at Woodlands Grill is very good and we preferred it to the other two restaurants. The food at Rice House was beautiful, but extremely pricey and not that tasty for the cost. The food at Beer Garden was “meh”. The pool is very nice and the drinks from the pool bar were good. One of my friends and I got massages at the spa and they were great! We didn’t golf, but the course looked gorgeous and I would imagine this would be a great place to vacation if you’re an avid golfer. Our biggest complaint was the lack of customer service considering the price of our stay and the 20% gratuity automatically added to EVERYTHING. Almost every time we called the front desk no one would answer. One time we called and asked for another towel and it took them TWO HOURS to bring it (my friend was trying to shower so we could get to our dinner reservation). Another time we asked them to lite a fire pit for us (as we were instructed to do if we wanted one) and a disgruntled employee complained under her breath and then finally lit one for us after about 30 minutes. There was a big “semi-celebrity” wedding going on the whole time we were there so maybe the staff was so busy tending to them that it caused them to neglect the other guests. Either that or communication is just not that great between employees in general. I will say that most employees were very friendly, but I don’t think they totally grasp what’s expected at a high-end resort. Also, the resort is VERY secluded, which is awesome if you truly want to escape, but not so great if you get sick of the only three restaurants on the property or want to go shopping on a rainy day.
Overall, we had a really fun weekend and enjoyed hiking, the spa, the pool, making s’mores and riding bikes. We probably would have taken advantage of more activities except the weather limited us a little bit and there isn’t anything to do indoors except eat.
A nice impromptu romantic get-away for a couple of days.

Lovely place in NW Georgia for a couples get-away. We stayed at the Inn in the mail building at it was clean and comfy. Expect resort prices for everything. We really enjoyed the trail ride, which provided a nice tour of the trails around the property to the lake and the family cemetery. Lots of history to learn in the Barnsley Museum, which was the old detached kitchen of the mansion now in ruins. Not thrilled the restaurant was “sold out” of a menu item early in the evening; and disappointed the Beer Garden was closed during our stay, but otherwise an enjoyable two-day get-away.

We used to live in the Atlanta area for many years and had been to Barnsley when it was just the ruins and gardens. We came partly to celebrate the completion of our new book that will be released in August and to gather with Atlanta friends that came up for golf & dinner at the Rice House. Our stay at the Inn has been fantastic! Every team member encountered from the door greeters to front desk to wait staff has been friendly, professional, and accommodating. Golf, sporting clays, and the spa were all top notch! Woodlands Grill is excellent and the Rice House was a complete 5 star dining experience!
Barnsley Resort is now at the top of our list - we will be back! And will bring our grown sons and their families for a stay in the cottages next time!
