Relax in paradise
Opinión escrita el 31 de Julio de 2021
We had the pleasure of celebrating our honeymoon here for 9 nights in July.
We stayed in the beautiful water villa which is fully kitted out including a balcony/ sun lounge area and stair access to the lagoon. A 10 min walk away from the restaurant/pool area the resort can provide bikes or golf buggy transport.
If relaxation isn’t your thing there are a lot of activities on offer at the south Palm resort with their water sports centre, dive centre and ample amount of boat trips- snorkelling, fishing, dolphin and sunrise/sunset views.
The Southern Maldives Divers centre staff were exceptional (many thanks Shaggy and LP) and offer some incredible dive sites including the breathtaking and unmissable manta ray dive.
The all inclusive package meals were delicious with a great variety of Asian cuisine, western meals, salad and dessert sections and the bar has everything you can expect with service to the pool. The only downside was no snacks throughout the day in this package.
The bar offers evening events of live music, DJ, Karaoke, movie and games nights which kept us thoroughly entertained after dinner.
The South Palm Resort has the benefit of having both the lagoon and Indian Ocean sides meaning you can explore both sides at any time.
Overall: Whilst the 1:10 flight from Velana-Gan+ 10 min speed boat ride to the island + transfer fees might put some guests off but we were in paradise at this resort and it’s definitely worth the trip. Offering great facilities, above all the staff were friendly and super attentive throughout our stay. We were able to combine relaxation with activities on this relatively young resort (Opened in winter 2019), and it offers a great value in price:comfort and highly recommend.
Most relaxing Vacation Ever!!

From our arrival via speed boat to the exceptional service from EVERY person on the resort, the trip was relaxation at its best! We opted to stay in one of the Beach villas - spacious, clean, and walking from our patio to the beach. A couple of cautions, the beach does have quite a few pebbles so shoes are a must, and there are lots of hermit crabs and geckos outside! Nevertheless, the room was cleaned daily (THANK YOU, ABDUL!) and new towels for bathroom and patio given daily. The outdoor shower was so much fun after swimming in the hot sun; it is totally private.
Secondly, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of different varieties. I am a pescatarian, and had plenty of fish options or vegetarian ones. While my friend, enjoyed plenty of other grilled meat options. Lots of South Indian dishes along with delectable dessert options! The service was impeccable! The chefs will create various sauces for you to enjoy your food- chimicurri or tahini. Also, they did not have iced coffee, but provided me with a bucket of ice and coffee to make my own which I appreciated given how hot it was! Small touches like those made the trip everything we hoped for! Also, they made the celebration of my friend’s birthday a full Resort event with candles, cake (HEAVENLY!), written messages, and song! Yes, they baked her a cake with a celebratory message on it! If you are celebrating, please let them know in advance to set it up, even if, only the cake is wanted.
Lastly, the Karumba spa is a must-visit! The lagoon and overall facilities were worth the booking and time. I combined the Discovery massage with the Thermal massage for a full body experience, and it was perfect! My friend was celebrating her birthday, and they MADE her a crown and bouquet! We left the spa feeling pampered and luxurious!
Our trip was everything we had hoped for and more. The kindness and attention to detail made the visit for us. We knew that we were visiting during the rainy season, so the weather was more temperamental. The sun shine brightly
in the morning, and it rained in the afternoon most days. Nevertheless, the resort and its staff made this more palatable!
My only reason for giving 4/5 (wish I could give 4.5) would be the domestic flight portion of the trip. There was little information given in advance about the flight times which produced a bit of anxiety as we left the US not sure when our flight to Gan would happen! But there was a guide that assisted us upon arrival in Male who directed us to the lounge in Male and arranged the flight arrangements. However, that was a very small part of our week.
Not luxurious but great value for money

When I'm planning a vacation I always check Tripadvisor's “Terrible” reviews to avoid a possible disappointment. Even so, if I don't find the complaints reasonable I might ignore them. And it's true in the case of South Palms Resort that 3 out of 5 “Terrible” reviews are out of date and ought to be deleted. They stem from 2019 when the resort was only half-completed (so you could argue it was opened prematurely). But the picture is changed now and almost everything is new and functioning. In fact on arrival, the staff-to-guest ratio was about 15:1, due to Covid travel fears. The lack of guests meant some excursions didn't run, but with no cases reported on the island and all staff said to be vaccinated, it may get back to normal soon. Covid did mean you couldn't visit the village on the adjacent island, nor take a boat over the lagoon to Addu City. Incidentally, the resort's health clinic provided Covid testing before departure.
Having so few fellow guests meant we enjoyed the full attention of the friendly staff. As someone else said, while you shouldn't expect a 5-star Maldives experience, it certainly represents great value for money, especially at the June price level. It's more like the old Club Med village atmosphere. Our beach villa was roomy, spotlessly clean and well-appointed, including a hair dryer and fridge. It also had an extra outdoor shower, complete with tame gecko! A big shady terrace divided the bedroom from the beach on the inner lagoon, which offered picture post-card sunsets.
Several reviewers complained about this shallow lagoon, which only rises to about 1.70 m. Yes, tdo ake slippers to avoid coral fragments and don't expect crystal clear water because the fine sand swirls about in the waves. But for a cooling swim anytime it's perfect. Shoals of tiny fish and even half a dozen small reef sharks hang out near the pier. For better snorkelling you take a boat trip out to a reef, where some people spotted turtles and even a manta ray, but I only managed to see lots of brightly coloured fish. I suspect there are far better reefs at other resorts, but as this was our first trip to the Maldives we can't compare. We didn't try snorkelling on the ocean side of the island (about 150 m away from the lagoon), so we might have missed something there. But the nearby scuba diving centre was friendly and professionally run and so I finally crossed an item off my bucket list by giving it a try (thanks for your patience, Shaggy!).
Last but really by no means least, the food and drink offer, bearing in mind the all-inclusive price we were paying, gets a well earned 5 out of 5. As we love spicy South Asian food, we felt pampered and found the choice tasty and varied. International dishes such as grills and pasta were available too. I loved the imaginative soups and the range of desserts was simply to die for. The wine was more than passable and the beer cold and endless! Bottled water is free in the restaurant, bar and in the villas, though I think it's filtered from a desalination plant. Overall, massive kudos to the entire kitchen and restaurant team for both food and service.
Would we go again? We might well: it's not a short journey, especially as in Male you may need to wait for the next domestic flight to Gan, from where you take a fast boat to the island. But that part of the journey was well-organised by the resort (though at extra cost) and flying low over the Maldives islands is novel enough to be an interesting part of the holiday.

Amazing resort for a couples holiday

Myself and my partner are from the UK and stayed at the South Palm resort from the end of March to mid-April 2021 (as part of emigrating to Hong Kong and adhering to travel rules for entry) and it was a beautiful resort. This was our first time visiting the Maldives and in terms of the location and natural beauty it was breath-taking. We spent 2 weeks in a beach villa and one week in a water villa and both were really decent sized and comfortable rooms with incredible views and scenery outside our door especially in the water villa where you could see every kind of fish and baby sharks swimming by in the mornings.
The resort is still very young and we were lead to understand that the official grand opening will be October 2021 but this didn’t impact on our stay. The facilities in terms of the pool and Moodhu bar were the main communal areas and both were well maintained and staffed, however, I believe there are still more facilities to add before the grand opening. There was also a bar towards the water villa side of the island which was closed due to Covid but I can imagine once it is open it would be a great place for food/drinks at that end of the island.
The staff and service was exceptional, especially when it came to my partners birthday as they made the day really special and helped me with an amazing breakfast in our water villa, special candle-lit outside table at dinner and a personalised cake with her name on. Our waiters during the stay in the Banyan restaurant were Abdullah and Mohammed, both of whom were really polite and friendly and always on hand whenever we needed anything during meal times. The only slight issue was when we ordered room service there was a bit of a wait for items, however, when we addressed this at reception, they took the feedback on and the service from that point onwards was faultless. We didn’t get everyone’s names but the restaurant staff, bar staff, room cleaners and the excursion co-ordinators were fantastic and really personable, always so helpful and catering to whatever needs we had.
We did the sunset fishing and snorkelling trips during the stay which were both really enjoyable but ended up sticking to the beach on the pool side of the island for snorkelling as the water there was so clear and there were always so many fish. I saw a big octopus and a black tip reef shark there just off the beach and there was lots of eels and fish amongst the coral and rocks without having to swim too far out. We also used the spa for a back and shoulder massage and it was such a relaxing and unique experience with the spa almost being its own little resort in the middle of the island.
In terms of food, we loved it. We ate at the Banyan buffet every day and even after 3 weeks we were still so impressed with the quality and choice on offer. There is a different themed menu every night and we particularly enjoyed the Maldivian night where you could tell the staff were really keen and excited to introduce their cuisine and educate us on the food (which was delicious).
All in all, it was a really memorable stay and somewhere we would definitely return to. It is quite far South from a lot of the main resorts, but so worth it as we felt like we had reached an untouched part of the Maldives. Would recommend to anyone as it was just a stunning place of natural beauty with a resort that is young but clearly keen to impress and cater for its customers to as high a standard as possible.
