Stayed here recently for one night with my teenage son so we could tour Virginia Tech. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was!! Our room was HUGE and so clean!! The pool was very nice as well. The morning breakfast was good as well. I would definitely stay here again if my son chooses Virginia Tech!
Pleasantly surprised at this wonderful hotel!

After reading some recent reviews, we were wondering what to expect. This place was wonderful! It has lots of suites (used to be Comfort Suites) with clean, large rooms and even an extra sink in the kitchenette area. The staff is super friendly, and they really seem to want the customers to have a pleasant stay. The landscaping, fountain, and lobby are all beautiful, and the hotel seems to have renovations often. Lindsey in housekeeping was especially nice to us and fixed our minor issue immediately! We travel very often, and this is one of the nicest Holiday Inn Expresses we've been to.
Nice from far, but far from nice

We spent two nights at this property.
Some parts of our stay were good, and others, not so much. Check in was seamless. The front desk employee was friendly and personable. Our room was a double queen, and was nice. Our room had a small "sitting area" with a couch, table, and chair, plus a small "kitchenette" with a fridge, microwave and sink. Also a small "office area" with a desk, desk chair, and work lamp.
After check-in, we left, went uptown and were caught in a thunderstorm. Upon returning to the hotel we discovered that our ground-floor window had leaked, parts of the carpet were soaked, and landscape material had washed in. I'm an old camper and this didn't freak me out, but I DID bring this to the attention of the front desk employees.
The next morning we had things to do and people to see, so we had breakfast (the "do-it-yourself-pancake-maker" IS pretty cool!) and left for the day. When we returned about 6 PM we were both surprised and disappointed to find that housekeeping had NOT visited our room. The beds were as we left them, the towels were in a pile on the bathroom floor, the trash had not been picked up, the coffee hadn't been restocked, and the junk washed in from the thunderstorm was still on the carpet.
When checking out the next morning, my wife politely mentioned this to the front desk employee. The employee replied (between bites of breakfast) that housekeeping service had been discontinued due to COVID.
Well, sheesh, what a load of bull****!
Perhaps that's correct, or perhaps the front-desk employee just wanted us to go away so she could finish eating, but if she WAS correct and housekeeping services were discontinued, then guests should be advised, both verbally, in LARGE TEXT on the website, with a sign in the room, AND a discounted rate should apply.
We're frequent visitors to Blacksburg, but from now on, we'll find somewhere else to stay
Holiday Inn Express Blacksburg - I wouldn't stay here again.

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel. The front desk staff was very kind and helpful somewhat. We called the front desk from another location to get ahold of my 92 year old grandpa and she said call his cellphone. I told her he doesn't have one and she informed us she couldn't send us to his room to talk to him.
We had some issues with our first room with ants and roaches in the room. We moved rooms after speaking to the front desk and the manager was very kind and discounted the room that night.
The continental breakfast was not very good either. We just ended up going to eat out.
The pool was closed one night due to someone pooping in the pool.
The elevators kept breaking down and were awful also.
I give this hotel a 3 of 5 based solely off the friendliness of the manager and most of the staff. Our second room was fine.
Overall very nice

Pros: This was a pretty nice place as it is relatively new and everything is in good condition. My room had a comfortable bed and a separate seating area with a sofa and chair and computer table. Also there was a mini bar with refrigerator and microwave oven which came in handy. There's a fitness room on the ground floor that has some cardio equipment and some hand weights. I went to breakfast on my first morning and it was good.
Cons: the girl at the front desk when I checked in just isn't cut out for that type of job...just not friendly at all. For those of you that are members of the IHG Rewards Club, I got no acknowledgment of being a platinum member here and no type of room upgrade. In fact I could tell by looking at the room map on the back of my door that I had one of the smallest rooms on the entire floor. Maintenance issues: check the air conditioner filters in your room as mine were quite dirty so I cleaned them out in the bathtub as housekeeping had already gone home for the day. The freezer compartment in my mini fridge needs to be defrosted.
