First Trip to Camaguey, Cuba

Reviewed 22 january, 2021

This was my first trip to Cuba with my partner, Ramon, who was born in Camaguey. We stayed in the Hotel E. Santa Maria and it was a wonderful hotel. I wasn't sure what to expect with this being my first trip, but the hotel room and especially the maid was wonderful. Unfortunately we traveled during the COVID situation, so the city had closed some of the restaurants, but I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast (complimentary) and my coffee each morning outside on one of the numerous patios.

Central location

The hotel is an old building in the centre of town however the room was basic with a very large updated bathroom and a large single bed. There was no window in the room since it was not on an outside wall however some other members of our group said that at least I did not have to put up with all the noise they experienced during the night. There was only one very thin pillow and the towels had worn very thin. The lift which apparently only serviced the third floor was not working so we most inconveniently had to go to the fourth floor in a different lift and indirectly walk some distance before going down stairs with luggage before walking further to the room. It was very confusing and several of us on the third floor kept getting lost. The restaurant was on the top floor and the lift would not always go to that level. Both dinner and breakfast were poor.

I'd avoid.

We were proposed a nice room with a double bed but preferred two single beds... the room we were given was rather humid (not smelling good) and also quite dirty. Great view from top floor breakfast spot, but rather bad breakfast as well.

Centrally located and reasonably comfortable.

In common with all of the hotels we stayed in on this trip the E Santa Maria is government-owned and operated. We had a large room looking onto the courtyard. Others in our tour had rooms fronting on the street, which they said was very loud. The bed was good, but the furniture was rather scruffy, the paint job was sloppy, and the water pressure was very bad. That said, the maid service was outstanding. Probably the best thing about this hotel is that it is centrally located, in the middle of a long pedestrian mall.

Great Location

Reviewed 30 november, 2019

Great location situated on the corner of the pedestrian street. Convenient and safe to walk around at night nearby. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was dated but the bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. We looked onto the pedestrian street so we did have some street noise and the Church bells on the opposite corner rang very loudly at 6.30am! The bathroom was very spacious - the shower was over the bath and although there was a handrail it was very awkward to get out of the bath without slipping - this seemed to be a common problem at the majority of our hotels in Cuba. Breakfast was basic European type with an omelet/egg station at the small roof top restaurant. Wifi cost was 1cuc/hour and worked in our room. Overall it was a good place to stay for our one night in Camaguey.
