Bad late arrival experience

Reviewed 15 june, 2022

As we had booked the last ferry to return from KI to the mainland, this caravan park seemed to be a sensible choice for staying a night. I’ve read that they have a 24/7 check-in kiosk. They must have received many of late arrivals due to its location and must have a solid SOP in place for those customers. Big mistake! The day before arrival, I emailed to inform them of my late arrival. An email with the late arrival instructions was received in the next morning, the day of arrival. Nothing in the emailed seemed to be out of the ordinary. There was an attachment of after hours check-in procedure that I didn’t read until we reached the reception. As it turned out, the attached procedure asked for my mobile phone number for generating my boomgate code. Well, a Singapore mobile number was already given to them when booking the site a month ago. Couldn’t they have used that? If they had to use an Australia local number for such an important function, should I have been informed much earlier? In addition, the email mentioned that the "reception is open until 9pm". We arrived before 8:30pm yet the reception was already closed. On the door was pasted a note with a phone number to call when having trouble with the check-in kiosk. However, I didn’t have a working Australia SIM card. Luckily, another late check-in customer arrived and he was kind enough to lend me his phone to call the emergency number. Unfortunately it only went to a voicemail recording. I tried replying the email I received stating my awkward situation then but haven’t received a single reply to date. So in a cold dark night we were stuck outside the closed reception without our boomgate code to enter the powered site that we already paid for. At such desperate time, we received the help from one of the caravans’ owner who let us use her boomgate code to enter. In short, that was the worst caravan park experience we have had after having stayed in 10 during our 3 weeks holiday. If you’re planning a late arrival to this place, please don’t make the same mistake as I did. The other aspects of this place are positive enough though. A spacious area with few trees and not too many sites. Decent toilets, shower and a well-equipped camp kitchen with a space to sit down and enjoy the food. Didn’t know how to operate the stove so I used our portable one. BIG4 standard? Doubt so. The night was quiet but traffic noise started in the morning. Woke up and we were greeted by a magnificent view!

Quiet and comfortable

Reviewed 7 april, 2022

Stayed in the ‘Stables Cottage’ for one night before heading over to KI. We loved the place, although we used a Stays voucher and stayed during the week we found it reasonably price. Staff we dealt with was very pleasant and helpful. The accommodation was clean, tidy and comfortable. Nice kitchen area and wood fire. The Stables are situated in a quiet area of the park which made you feel like you were away from everyone. Bed was big and comfy. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend

Disappointed

Reviewed 15 february, 2022

The accommodation in the homestead area was very acceptable, however we were disappointed with the camp kitchen it was the filthiest kitchen I have experienced and it is supposed to be a Big 4. There was a sign stating “you use it you clean it” and that’s fair enough. However there was no detergent, cleaning spray, cloths and no hot water. Oops wait there was a lump of steelo wow. If a proud owner/manager leads by example and allocates cleaning materials, then people will clean after they have used the camp kitchen. On cleaning how does one clean wash dishes in the Homestead rooms when there is only a small hand basin. Why can’t there be a dedicated plastic wash dish left in the rooms with the soap and cloths. Does this mean the dishes and cups don’t get washed by previous guests

Disappointing

Reviewed 4 january, 2022

Having booked 3 months in advance of our 5 night stay I thought we may have been given a better site than we did. We are happy to go 'rustic' or even bush camping but to be given a site, in a paddock, on the main road and with no shade was disappointing to say the least! The van faced west - the last in the row so we were not afforded the afternoon shade from the van next to us & meant we had to park our car alongside the van and use the awning on the car for shade. The amenities were hot, claustrophobic and flooded most afternoons... There were no bins/recycling crates around the park. The site was perfect for a one night stay due to pre/post KI ferry access.... as there was enough room to leave the car hitched to the van... This was less than expected at a free camping site and grossly overpriced at $40 per night. There were sites given to overnight visitors that was better than the one we had.. We left 2 days early due to the poor location and lack of shade (temp was 39°) Would not recommend for a longer stay than one night... Not sure how this has been given the endorsement from Big 4... classic or not - some sites leave a lot to be desired... Having said all of this, the hosts were friendly and the view was magnificent...

If you like flies, this is the place

Reviewed 29 october, 2021

There are a number of cottage-type buildings in which you can stay at this site, and we stayed in the Railway Cottage. The first thing we noticed upon entering this cottage was the immense number of dead flies and other insects in every room, on every surface. Along with the flies was the dreadful smell, which has been mentioned in other reviews. It was really awful and we couldn't ventilate the cottage properly because there were very few windows with fly screens - and none of the doors had fly screens either. Having cleaned up the flies and opened a couple of small windows, our next experience was that of being in a fish bowl! There was an almost continuous stream of people (presumable other guests) walking past our cottage, and all able to see in 'as you do'. So then we were in the perplexing situation of having either the public gaze, or total lack of any view because of pulling down the blinds. Added to this, when we asked if we could have an evening meal we were told on the day that we were staying, that they had a private function that night, therefore we concluded that guests were both secondary and not necessary to feed. This resulted in our driving a 60 km round trip to Normanville to eat. I am sure that it is the responsibility of any hotelier to ensure that guests are fed, or at least have access to food, prior to having the entire restaurant removed for a private function.
