lovely place, but construction is currently a problem
We had a terrific, spacious room overlooking the plaza; terrific bathroom, comfortable bed, welcoming and very accommodating staff, best location ever, and interior open air courtyard for breakfast. However, it appears the hotel is the lone holdout from a construction project surrounding three sides of it. Due to the heat, construction begins early, about 4 a.m. There is nothing the hotel staff can do to alleviate this problem or I'm sure they would. But until heavy construction around the hotel is completed, you may want to think about alternative accommodations (other than Saturday night as there does not appear to be any construction activity on Sunday). If not for the construction our rating would be higher.
Avoid this hotel
The hotel is old and run down. The only positive is a working air conditioner, the is no water pressure and the breakfast is basic, serving 3 day old croissants....worst is being on the this’d floor on a Saturday night in room 303 with people dancing on the rooftop terrace and the party on the streets. Called to get a room where we could sleep, they had none available. It is very dishonest to rent rooms like that. They either don’t run parties on the roof top or don’t rent the rooms. They can’t have both. We we there for 3 nights......painful.
We just spent one night and wanted to share the experience. First the positives: Location was very convenient to access the walled city Rooftop pool and bar area-nice views Staff was friendly The negatives: Even though hotel is in a tourist area, staff doesn't really understand English much, which caused some issues with mis information Hotel is "old and charming", but unfortunately that meant the room was dark First our safe didn't work and they weren't able to fix it. Then our TV had the same problem. They offered to move us to a new room, but at that point, we had already unpacked and didn't want the hassle of packing up. I suggested that we get a discount on the room or a free drink and there was no response. The third thing was that there was no hair dryer in the room. Had to wait for one to be brought up. Each of these issues required us to wait for someone to come to the room...wasting our time during a short stay. The next am we asked for two bottles of water when we were leaving and were charged for them...I would have thought as a gesture of customer service they would have at least comped the water. Was definitely not up to our expectations.
We stayed in Hotel Monterrey for 3 nights on our first trip to Cartagena. We had a mixed experience of the hotel. Positives; nice large room with lots of light, fantastic location between the walled old town and hip Getsemani, good water pressure and good air-conditioning, great price for the location. The negatives; we were on the 3rd floor with the roof top bar above us so the music and the scraping of furniture was deafening, no shade on the pool deck and blood temperature water made for an unusable pool area, disinterested staff, large gaps around the doors added to the noise when people returned late at night.
Heavenly Hotel Monterrey
Hotel was in a perfect location. Room was spacious- did not have the view that we were looking for but bed was comfortable and they provided free water- and kept the hotel very clean. When you came in from outside your were always refreshed with water. Breakfast could have been improved---eggs out with the rest of the food. They compensated for that by making them at our request did not charge us-- also was not noisy at night like the description said. We slept comfortably would definitely recommend. Can walk everywhere
