A step back in time.

A gem of a historic hotel in Clayton NM. We were greeted by the owner and instantly could tell how much she enjoys her establishment and meeting new people. All her staff is friendly. We chose a room on the second floor with a shared balcony. After walking around the town we enjoyed sitting on the balcony sipping some wine. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated. I also enjoyed checking out her numerous items for purchase. Of course, I couldn’t resist a pair of earrings but also enjoyed hearing she makes the jewelry. We would definitely return to Hotel Eklund.

Traveling to Denver from East Texas, this area was about how far we wanted to drive on day 1. My husband found it online and we thought it would be fun to stay somewhere really different when all the other hotels were Motel 8 caliber. It's just delightful! We actually parked on the street, right out front, felt like the 1940s. I think a husband and wife own it and they were very nice, gave a little history when I asked at breakfast and I loved that. It was my husband and I and our teen son and daughter. We got 2 rooms with twin beds. The beds are sooooo comfortable! There is a train that runs a few times a night but I sleep with ear plugs and never heard it, but my husband did. It's a very old hotel but was very, very clean! Breakfast was the best combination of a great continental and a Bed & Breakfast. Coffee, juice, water. Quiche, breakfast tacos, boiled eggs, oatmeal, biscuits that can all be heated up in a microwave. Cereal and yogurt , it was a nice spead. The dining room is filled with historic architecture detail. It was just a really great stop on our trip.

We love this hotel! It is a step back in time, away from the cares of the world. If you are looking for all the modern amenities, look somewhere else. The rooms are quaint, but wonderfully done. Everything is clean and comfortable. The beds are comfortable.
JoBeth, the manager, is truly a hidden treasure, a delight to visit with. Being a native of Clayton, she probably can tell you anything you want to know about the area. Her children's book-she was the illustrator-is for sale in the lobby.
It's reasons like her and the obvious care taken in running the hotel that my family keeps returning.
Great little historic hotel, quiet town and good night's sleep

If you are traveling the old Santa Fe Trail to Santa Fe I highly reccomend the Eklund for a good nights rest. Not extravagantly fancy, but beautiful and lovingly cared for. Beds were super comfortable and even sleeping over the main street the town was not overly loud. Owners were very kind and accommodating. Check out the bar and the history. Worth a stop.
You Should Stay Here

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Eklund. We wanted to view the nearby tri-state marker for New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma and we would not have found it if the hotel employee had not drawn out a map for us; we appreciate her taking the time to do this for us.
You’ll enjoy the creaks as you walk around and take in the history of this building. You should expect the quirks of staying in an old building. We enjoyed staying in a room with the balcony and the outdoor patio area was also nice.
