Great hotel, shame about the smell
Opinión escrita el 23 de Julio de 2021
The Coniston Inn occupies a great location, right next to Coniston Water and in the shadow of the Old Man of Coniston. On a bright, sunny summer day the surrounding views are quite idyllic - mountains, a shimmering lake, trees, blue sky and fluffy white clouds. But, during the heatwave we experienced on our short visit there in July, things are quite different. And that was because of the smell...from a carefully-disguised cesspit in the grounds, yards from the hotel and the outside sitting area. It’s not the fault of the Coniston Inn that Britain was enduring 30C heat at the time, but it seems obvious that the waste disposal system the hotel utilises is inadequate during high temperatures.
Apart from this niggle, we enjoyed our stay. The public area - mainly a large bar area used for drinking, breakfasts and evening meals - was well designed and the bar well stocked. The menu was adequate for evening meals but less so if you wanted a lunchtime sandwich or lite bite as there were only items from the main menu to choose from. The rooms have all the amenities you would expect - a safe, TV, tea-making facility and an electric fan, which came in very handy - but our room had no bath, merely a shower. Indeed, the bedroom was quite dark, small and cramped, as if shoe-horned into a corner of the hotel. It also looked down on waste bins and general bric-a-brac and was quite noisy, especially early in the morning. We stayed at the Coniston Inn with friends, who were given a much bigger, more airy room. We were happy for them but it was annoying that we had both paid the same price but got differently sized and located rooms - a problem I am sure many hotel guests encounter.
Breakfast was buffet-style and food was plentiful but waiting staff allowed used crockery to mount up on the table without being cleared, something that happened in the evening, too. It’s difficult to chat at evening dinner with used plates and glasses littering the table.
Finally, Covid. The hotel did all in its power to ensure guests were safe. All staff wore masks, even on and after “Freedom Day” July 19. Hand gel was freely available but our rooms weren’t cleaned at all during the four days we were there. To be fair, we had been warned about this Covid safety measure at check-in, and new towels etc were freely available when asked for.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay, but the smell wasn’t very pleasant.
Recently refurbed but needs air con in summer

We stayed here during the heatwave in July so appreciate our experience may have been a little different had it been cooler. In summary we would definitely stay here again but maybe not in the height of summer with our dog. It didn’t feel particularly dog friendly in the heat, and even if it had been slightly cooler in temperature the hotel just isn’t equipped or setup very well for a hot summer day.
The hotel is recently refurbished so the rooms are really nice and clean. My main gripe with our room was that it was facing the sun, and we were on the top floor so it was extremely hot, in total we ended up with 3 fans in there and it was still unbearable. Our poor dog really really struggled to the point we were nearly going to leave. I asked whether there was the opportunity of changing rooms so the other side of the hotel in some shade but was told, with very little empathy of my situation, that there was nothing free until the Saturday. That was fair enough but throughout the rest of my stay I saw the cleaners cleaning the rooms opposite us and new guests arriving so I was disappointed by this. I think for summer, the hotel should really consider investing in some air con as it really did put a dampener on our stay. The only other thing with the room was the shower (if you can call it that), there was no pressure and the temperature was all over the place.
The location of the hotel is great, it’s right on the lake with spectacular views and easy walking distance of the village. We took a drive round the lake (and to cool down with air con) and there were lots of forests and small pebble beaches, restaurants etc, definitely worth an explore! There were outdoor wooden cabins that were situated in the grounds and near the lake at the hotel which would be ideal to sit in and picnic in throughout the day but they were all taped off so we were limited to the grass. However, on our last day the tape was removed and they were free to sit in, not sure what changed from the day before.
The food was lovely, but the dining experience was ruined a bit by lack of flexibility. There’s a lovely outdoor area to have drinks but you’re not allowed to eat outside, only inside. Which would be fine if the restaurant had air con or at least a fan nearby. Instead it was stiflingly hot and not an enjoyable dining experience. Again, the hotel just doesn’t seem setup for summer. One evening I asked if we could swap tables as the sun was directly on us and unbelievably hot (windows were shut because of flies) but they said the one I was looking at was reserved, yet we were there and hour and a half and nobody used the table.
Overall the hotel was good and I’d stay here in cooler conditions or if they had air conditioning. However for what we paid and the unbearable heat of the room / dining areas, being unable to use our room as I’d have liked, I was disappointed and I’d have expected more.
Room for improvement !

My friend and I came to the Inn with our daughters for a few days, fantastic location, magnificent views, beautiful grounds , superb decor, lovely spacious room, housekeepers friendly and helpful, however I found the staff lacked a professional manor and when I complained about my dessert my reply from the kitchen was that basically I was wrong! this absolutely infuriated me. my advise to them in future would be to apologise politely . After all the customer is always right!. and by the way I know exactly what chantilli cream is! paying premium prices i expect premium service.
Lovely weekend break

I stayed here with my boyfriend and our dog. It was in a perfect location for exploring the area and right next to the lake.
The food and service was great, although I thought it was a little over priced. The restaurant only allowed guests to dine there during our stay which was really useful as all the other local restaurants were so busy.
We didn’t have to use our car once as there are so many lovely walks from the hotel.
Overall great weekend break!
Best pie EVER.
Opinión escrita el 3 de Julio de 2021
The BEST steak and ale pie we have ever had... in all seriousness. Delicious starters too (duck spring roll + devilled whitebait), and a scrumptioud eton mess for dessert. Great service, personable and attentive staff, and lovely inside seating which is dog friendly. They even have a doggy menu for dog treats! My only area for improvement is to have more outdoor seating! It was cold when we visited so we were happy to sit inside, but if it were a warm day we'd have struggled for an outdoor table. We will definitely be back for more of that mouth-watering pie!
