Visit cut short
Lovely hotel second time we stayed. Fabulous staff and so helpful We booked for 3 nights but had to leave as the tier changed. The evening meal was fabulous and our friends had the next table to us. We had beef and our friends had the such. Our server was polite and attentive It was our last meal out for a while. I used the gym and pool which had an excellent wet room. The owner Simon took time to speak to us and had interesting stories to tell. Breakfast was good and served to us. We will be back
Our Favourite Place
After finding this gem a few years back we try to visit at least once or twice a year. This year has certainly been a challenge and our stay had to be cancelled and rearranged due to lockdown. The staff were amazing and had no problem with rearranging our stay and lucky for me our rescheduled date fell on my birthday weekend. On arrival, I was so thrilled to find we had been upgraded to a room with amazing views of the mountains and lake, also a small welcome gift and birthday card - nice touch guys! The Hall was beautifully decorated for the festive season, and there was a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We had been a little apprehensive about our visit due to the COVID situation but was really pleased to find the hotel was extremely COVID safe. Temperature taken on check-in, and plenty of hand sanitiser stations throughout the hotel. All the staff wore face masks and all fellow guests followed the mask wearing rules - with the exception of one party (there's always one, maybe they all had medical reasons). There were a few changes to the usual high standards of the hotel, no turn down service, no little welcome drink on arrival, no 5 course evening dinner, as there was now a combined Lake View and Brasserie menu, but these were all to be expected due to the difficult and challenging ways of having to operate due to COVID. The food both at dinner and breakfast was excellent. At breakfast although there was no help yourself buffet, you could still order the items and they were brought direct to your table. The staff were clearly working hard to make sure everyone was as safe as possible. Sadly we didn't get chance to enjoy the spa this time as it was fully booked whilst we were there - note book it early if you want to use it. Unlike perviously you do have to book a time slot and there is an additional charge, but again this is another change due to COVID I assume! We settled for a lovely walk down to the lake shore and around the beautiful grounds. Regardless of all the changes we had an amazing and enjoyable stay and can't wait to visit again. However hope when you are able you re-introduce the little extras that make a visit to the Hall extra special.
Disappointing after recommendations
Spa area was excellent and there was plenty of room for us to move around without coming into contact with others. The 1.5 hours period of time issued to everyone was enough for us to try everything a couple of times. Our room was nice and had a small balcony where we could see the lake from. The Christmas decorations throughout the hotel were beautiful and the main rooms felt very festive. There were just small things missing though e.g. skirtings around the bottom of the trees to hide the legs. The room where we had our meal was not particularly attractive. During the day the view from our table would have been amazing looking right down the lawns to the lake beyond however, at night you looked out into blackness and could see nothing but your own reflections which was of putting. It would be better if the table was set to look into the room at night during the winter. The food, now we have heard very good things about the food and were looking forward to our dinner, unfortunately we were very disappointed. I had chicken wings roulade which came as 3 deep fried breadcrumbed balls, not what I was expecting but I was happy to try. The first one was okay although did have a slightly greasy taste, the first bite of the second one contained gristle and a small bone which completely pute off and I stopped eating them. My partner had prawn cocktail which was bland and was.something made far better by ourselves at home. Our mains were fish and chips with a curry sauce and roast beef. What could go wrong? Well the curry sauce was very watery and did not taste like curry, the triple cooked chips were hard and inedible, the pea puree stack tasted lovely and fresh but was stone cold and the fish was swimming in grease underneath. I was only able to eat about a third of the fish before giving up as it was so oily and tasted of old oil. My partner's roast beef was very tender and tastied okay but his mash and Yorkshire pudding were as cold as my peas, his veg may have been steamed but if they saw steam it was from a near by kettle as they were raw and his gravy was also cold and tasteless. Our waitress asked us if there was anything wrong as it was obvious from the amount of food left that there was and when we showed and explained about the amount of grease under and on the fish and that our other items were cold she shrugged her shoulders and said "oh okay". Nothing else was said, no apology was given. I had mincemeat bread and butter pudding for pud and it did taste delicious but again neither the pudding or custard were particularly warm. My partner had the cheese board. He had 5 small slithers of cheese, 2 pots of chutney and some sour dough toasted bread. The bread was the best part of it. Now let me say we might have had a bad night with a poor chef cooking our meal as my sister-in-law and her husband stayed the week after and had a lovely meal. Their food was piping hot and their cheese board was full with large pieces of cheese all at the proper temperature however, for a 4 star hotel the standards should be consistent and the staff should have addressed our issues in a far more professional way. We should have at least been offered an apology and a complimentary glass of wine each. We can only judge on our experience and as I have said, we have heard a lot of really good things from others, so much so, we intend trying one more time in the future and we hope so much that we will find our first experience was a bad night. Fingers crossed.
Guess we’ll never know
I enquired here for a special occasion, requested to sit in the window and a champagne list as we’re celebrating. Got a reply to say they can leave a note but cannot guarantee and sent me no information regarding wine or champagne. I would have thought in the current climate you would be more inclined to look after potential guests, especially when they intend of spending £100s on food and champagne. It is not that hard to put a reserved sign on a table in the window. Would have been a nice place to spend our celebrations after winning an extremely lucrative contract, but guess we’ll never know now. Look after your customers, service goes a long way.
14th Wedding Anniversary
Where do I start ....... My husband and I hold so many special memories at Armathwaite Hall as we were married there 14 years ago , 22nd December 2006. Back then the hotel was so very different ran by a small team and not as big on weddings as it is now with the function room etc. We have returned to Armathwaite Hall over the past 14 years on many occasions and we rarely complain but I feel on this occasion it must be addressed. On our arrival on the 22nd , we were warmly welcomed by a lovely lady on reception , however we were disappointed when asked if we had visited the hotel before , when my husband was told in booking that it would be noted that it was indeed our anniversary and we love the hotel due to us being married there. I replied yes we have been lots as holds a special place. Our room was ready , due to Covid obviously our bags were not taken and left to us which I can understand. Room 126 , carpet ripped under one of the chairs , needed a little upkeep. Afternoon tea perfection we thoroughly enjoyed , a little background music would make a much nicer ambiance however . We then attended the spa which now comes with a £20 pp charge this was never the case until Covid to my recollection ! I thought this was dreadful as a paying guest this should be included. We were to eat in the Lake View restaurant as the brasserie was not open, this was not stated on the hotel website. Our meal was shocking gone are the days of the five courses, now standard menu. My husband ordered the beef it arrived with about 2 inches of fat , red raw and as tough as old boots ! My risotto cold and not one bit appetising. We never complain but felt we had too. The duty manager in deed pulled out the stops gave us a bottle of champagne and deducted the food from our bill. All I want to say to Simon is , this place used to be wonderful , magical , special , seems these days the emphasis is on where money can be made and cut and no attention to detail. The breakfast staff in particular miserable no smiley faces , it’s all about customer service . I hope that next time my visit will be more memorable.
