Grande Hotel da Curia

Reviewed 31 december, 2014

Like most people, I had great expectations for this hotel too... I was hoping to find something majestic, something exquisite, something that could match the name and history of the place... but no, it's none of that. I leave with the feeling it was a great place once that turned out old and is slowly dying. The 3 days in gave me that impression. Positive aspects to me are the main room, which is very sweet and confortable, with all the antiques and paintings resembling an old era; and the warm temperature in all floors (please not the building is huge). The negative are too many to point out...

not good at all

Reviewed 28 october, 2013

I had great expectations for this hotel, it was a birthday gift pack to my boyfriend.. first of all the hotel was not the one in the pictures of the pack, the Spa had the jacuzzi and big pool not usable (broken) and what was left was really bad. The elevator was also broken, so we had to carry our bags through the stairs!!! the room was not that bad and the breakfast was alright too. We both enjoyed a lot the outside of the hotel, exploring the park was great. It´s beautiful but with so many nice hotels in the area i´m sure any of the others would be better... Curia it´s beautiful and so relaxing but next time i will stay somewhere else for sure.

Time warp.

We stayed at this hotel as part of an 8 day fly and drive holiday in Portugal. This hotel was part of the package the travel agency arranged and not a personal choice. After staying there one night, it certainly wouldn't be my personal choice in any event. The hotel has a grand name and probably a grand past, but it is run down and doesn't earn the 3 star rating it has. The room and bathroom were spacious, but that's about all that could be said for it. Furniture was old. TV was old. Hallways were dark and had carpet full of stains. Since Curia isn't exactly bustling with life we decided to have dinner at the hotel. The restaurant could offer all of two choices for main course (neither of them really very good). When we got up in the morning and went for breakfast at 7:45 we were given to understand (no English-speaking staff on hand) that this was too early and brealfast would be ready at 8:00. We went for a half hour walk, but at 8:15 there was still only a very limited breakfast available. Service was poor. The hotel is understaffed. Wouldn't recommend this to anybody else.

Don't be lured

The hotel has a lot of potential, but unfortunately is worn out, dirty and understaffed. The 'Spa' is practically non-existant and overpriced. With the variety and, in most cases, quality of hotel offer in Portugal this one is definitely a no-go!! JP

historic worn hotel - more 2 than 3 stars - espresso to be paid at breakfast, Wifi only in lobby

Reviewed 1 june, 2013

if you want to stay in a historic hotel and really want to experience the historic times (here the golden years 1920ies) you better spend 20€ more per night and go to the Palace Hotel (see my review there). This place is in some (most!) parts quite worn and old (hallways dirty carpets, linoleum) - in other they tried to invest (e.g. 2 indoor pools, Sauna, jacuzzi (out of order), Turkish bath, Gym but never finalised or just kept in bad conditions (dirty floor, unfinished rooms etc.) The rooms are spacious but the the bed and furniture is old fashioned (not from 1920 but maybe newer cheap replicas), small tube TVs from 1995 and no internet in room (neither Wifi nor LAN cable) makes it really boring to stay in the room. Wifi is ONLY in the lobby area, not even in the breakfast room - oh yes: breakfast room is modern 50ies style room (seems that they replaced the old ballroom with that new addition?) - breakfast was expected: ham, cheese, Muesli, Jam and very poor coffee - espresso you need to pay extra (1€ compared to 0,6€ in bars nearby much better choice) BTW: we were only 10 guests in early June 2013 - quiet times for Curia.....
