Great hotel with a personal touch

Reviewed 22 october, 2022

Stayed for a night whilst travelling between N Ireland & Newcastle. A lovely old country house complete with original wood panelling and a log fire burning in the grate all set in large grounds in a very quiet countryside location. Our bedroom was large with a good-size comfortable bed and all the items one would need - and if not, the friendly manager would be more than happy to help. Dinner (and breakfast) were both good - I'd heartily recommend the curry. THis isn't one of those ridiculously over-priced country house hotels; but has the feeling of a warm cosy quiet place with very friendly staff who will look after you.

Ernespie - a quality country house hotel

Reviewed 17 october, 2022

My wife and I recently stayed at the Ernespie House Hotel in September. It was not the first time as it one of my favourite small hotels. We used to visit it when it was the Urr Valley hotel many years ago. Under its recent comparatively new management it has changed immeasurably and has gone from strength to strength. Shashank and his team have now developed a tastefully decorated cosy hotel set in beautiful grounds with exquisite views [from the lpicture windows of the lounge and restaurant] of the gentle hills of southern Dumfries and Galloway. The hotel rooms are all very comfortable and each is equipped with all the pleasant accessories you would expect in an establishment run by a discerning and caring management. However, the Ernespie highlight for me is the wonderful menu provided by the talented kitchen staff. They remain true to the provision of high quality Scottish fare at its best but liven this up on request with the most delicious South Asian cuisine. A relaxing post dinner drink [usually featuring a good whisky of course!] beside the roaring log stove in the lounge in the winter season is my idea of heaven! Ernespie makes a secluded cosy stopping place for travellers coming to or from the Cairnryan to Northern Ireland ferry which is only less than an hour's drive away but actually it is perfect in any case for anyone seeking a pleasant break in a peaceful and relaxing quality country house hotel. Like any good hotelier Shashank is always improving his accommodation offer. It must sometimes be difficult to continue to improve his already high standards.

Very friendly, welcoming and attentive staff - nothing was any trouble. Amazing location set in beautiful grounds and countryside. We got a lovely upgrade to our room to a four-poster bed which was spotlessly clean and the shower was powerful. The main enjoyment of our stay was the food especially dinner which was delicious with good portions. Highly recommend for a wonderful chilled weekend with my wife before I start a new job.

"Good" rather than "Very Good"

Reviewed 15 october, 2022

We stayed here for two nights whilst visiting the area. The long drive from the public road up to the hotel and the well maintained rural setting is very impressive, although there is no immediately obvious indication of where the reception area is. Our welcome from the owner was friendly and the room and bed very comfortable. However, we did not find the housekeeping satisfactory with only cursory attention given to our room during our stay. Also, the towel rail in the bathroom did not work. We gained the impression that the hotel was working to a very strict budget and felt that this may be impacting on some of the standards normally expected in a hotel of this category. This review appears to be more critical than others, but it is only based on our findings and experience.
