Very Poor Bookkeeping & Customer Service
Reviewed 24 August, 2021
This is a lovely, spotlessly clean, well run and well maintained property. I stayed in July 2021 and again in August of 2021. I enjoyed both stays. My review is based on an accounting error, lack of customer service to assist me with this error and the arrogant attitude of the manager.
Like all hotels, The Garrison charges your credit card twice for your stay and the second charge “falls off “ your account in a day or two. As a rule, the second charge is the same dollar amount as the first. This was not the case for the charges for my August stay however. I mentioned this at check out since the two charges were very different, by more than $200. I was assured it was perfectly normal. By the weekend the charge was still “hanging” on my credit card. I called several times and was told that the manager, Tanya, would return my call. By Monday I still had not heard from anyone at the hotel and when I called to inquire again, the front desk hung up on me. I contacted my credit card company who told me that both charges had been posted to my account, and had not “fallen off “ as promised. The erroneous charge was nearly $1000. Since the hotel manager obviously wasn’t interested in assisting me, I filed a complaint with my bank.
As a seasoned traveler, I fully expect to be treated like a valued customer. In turn, I am respectful of every property I stay at, thank each and every employee I encounter and tip accordingly,. There is absolutely no excuse for the rude and arrogant behavior of the manager at this hotel.

Appears to have been built on sometime in the past, as the elevator is located in the middle of the building away from the front desk
Large room, with a comfortable bed
Nice breakfast area, along with an outside area with furniture and tables
Would definitely stay here again
Clean, unique, and an EV charger, to boot!

Our stay at The Garrison was very good from reservation to checkout. As we came out of the roundabout and onto the property, the manicured property was immediately welcoming to these two weary out-of-towners. The young lady at the desk was engaged on the phone and acknowledged us, but didn't rush the conversation (a reservation) on the phone. After filling out a few forms, we were checked in and into our room. Here's what we thought (No patience? Skip to the end!):
Our room on the 1st floor was clean, odor-free, and tastefully furnished. We had a single king bed and all the standard amenities: refrigerator, coffee maker, ice bucket, hair dryer, hangers. No stationery in the writing desk, but paper was available at the front desk. The bed was entirely too soft for my wife and I which resulted in some less-than-restful sleep, but bed firmness is a personal preference. Just know if you're used to a medium-firm or firm, this is not it!
Laugh if you will, but I am borderline OBSESSIVE about a decent bathroom in a hotel. Don't get it wrong-- I've showered in places with plenty of creepy crawlies and haven't batted an eye (Vietnam, looking at you), but showering is the most relaxing part of my day so at a hotel I expect my bathing quarters to be nothing short of satisfactory! Our bathroom was spotless and I really REALLY liked the dark wood and natural wood used in the bathroom furniture. The shower itself was a bit awkwardly designed as you can't avoid the spray of cold water during the first fire-up, but the toiletries in said shower were nicer smelling and gentler on the skin than others used in other hotels. Shower head had two or three settings and hot water was available quickly. Unlike other hotels I have stayed in recently, no signs of peeling wallpaper, mold, or cut-rate repair jobs. Towels are soft and absorbent, but not plush and luxurious. I didn't come expecting the latter and now neither should you!
The Fitness Center:
Fitness center is comprised of a treadmill, an elliptical, a recumbent bicycle, a dumbell rack, 2x yoga mats, and a full mirror wall. During our stay, the fitness center was by reservation only (1-hour blocks). The front desk was able to take our reservations, but either they didn't write it down for all to see or didn't impress upon other guests that it was reservation only as every morning we got interrupted. A small and functional fitness center overall! TV present if you're someone who likes to use it.
Closed during the pandemic and not yet back up and functional. (As of July 5, 2021)
Continental breakfast was served each morning from 6:00-10:00a and consisted of bagels, muffins, boxed cereal, limited fresh fruit, coffee (New England's Best), packaged hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, milk, and granola/snack bars. Breakfast sandwiches are available at the front desk for $3.00/ea. The muffins were tasty, but everything else was just so/so.
The breakfast/lounge area had a great mountain lodge vibe to it thanks to the stone hearth, cozy furniture, and panoramic view of the meadow behind the hotel where birds could be seen at any of the several very busy feeders. It was great to watch the blackbirds eating their breakfast while I enjoyed mine! I also enjoyed the display of artifacts from the local historical society, giving context to a very old and prolific manufacturing town. I totally appreciate something like this more than the usual "stock photo" kind of hotel decor, ya know?
The EV Charging:
As this was our first long road trip with our EV, a charger was a MUST. Thankfully, The Garrison has a total of three chargers for free guest use: 1x non-networked Level 2 charger w/ J-1772 and 2x Tesla destination chargers. Unfortunately, the charging spots are not marked and we found those spots often blocked by non-EV vehicles during our stay. The front desk was helpful in trying to sort out who was blocking, but if the vehicles aren't registered there's not much that can be done. When able to charge, the J-1772 charger worked flawlessly! I would recommend that the hotel clearly paint these spots a different color (as other businesses do), add signage, or both.
Being only seconds from the highway and a mile from downtown Dover, this is truly a great location for a hotel. The walk into Dover is very pedestrian friendly, taking you alongside 19th century houses and beautiful gardens. Being so close to the highway made this an easy jump-off point for all of our explorations in the area as well. Surpisingly not noisy nor busy for being that close to the highway.
The Bottom Line:
We enjoyed our stay at The Garrison and would give it a solid 4.0. Clean rooms, cozy vibe, and great location offset the lackluster breakfast and the inconsistent availability of EV charging. I would stay here again and recommend you consider doing the same!
