Room for improvement but friendly family and fairly priced

Reviewed 27 september, 2019

· The family that runs this place has been accommodating, the son and mom are friendly. I could check in early and store my bag while I was out for the day before my evening flight. I booked a single room but got a family room with 3 beds. The guesthouse is located in a pretty nice middle class neighborhood, with several other guesthouses in the same street. Several bus lines stop app. 150 meters away from the house, also to the airport (the 300 is direct but takes about 1.5 hours). In 15-20 min you are downtown. Day bus ticket adult GBP 4. There should be some restaurants, pubs and even a mall in the area, but I did not see them. Bathroom clean and big enough for 1 person. The breakfast room downstairs is open 24/7 so you can always walk in for a piece of fruit or to sit down to read a book or something. The breakfast itself is pretty basic, no eggs or anything luxurious, but good enough considering the room price. · The house could use some maintenance. It was warm in the room, the duvet too thick for the time of the year. To close the window you have to stand on top of the windowsill and push it down hard. Dust in the corners of the room. Mattress felt worn out. Slanted bedside lamp. Noisy aparatus when you use running water, shower or toilet - the guests in the room nextdoor will hear it for sure. It did not matter whether the window was open or closed, you could hear the traffic sounds from outside quite clearly. One morning during breakfast mom was calling on her mobile phone in the back with some family member in Arab or something, speaker out loud. The other morning the fire alarm went off, mom threw a dry kitchen towel on top of the bread toaster and opened all windows. In the morning you can take the bus to the city on this street, but at night when you go back, you have to exit the bus in another street and walk through the neighborhood for about 8 min to reach the guesthouse.

Bad communication and service

Reviewed 7 september, 2019

Stayed here for 4 nights and never will return, the owner has not enough English language knowledge to be running a buisiness (he speaks mostly arabic) + the almost made me pay twice, i was lucky to use a prepaid card. Their machine said "payment declined" and then he wanted me to out into the city and oay cash, when i checked my card the money had already been taken...so would have been 440 pounds. After 2 phonecalls to my bank and Amex and his daughter in between to translate the issue got fixed. Also this is a beautifull victorian house but they somehow decided to put really crappy furniture inside the room :-/ so sad to see. Also the breakfast served are 50 pence toast bread, mini plastic packed cheeses, mini marmalade and cornflake boxes.

Onemanroom for two persons

Reviewed 21 august, 2019

The House and surroundings were fine, but my sister and I were given the probably smallest room in the House with only one 1.2 bed. We slept terribly on too little space. My sister had to sleep on the floor one Night because it was too tight. The toilet was LITERALLY one step from the bed and in a tambour cupboard, so No privacy at all. When we complained to the host he strangely Said that we would have been allright if we were a married couple. We paid for a double room but Got a single, and nothing was done to amend the situation or at least give a discount. Not recommendable

Basic

Friendly welcome and very helpful but disappointing standards, very basic and tired rooms, much in need of decorating less than impressed. Expensive for what we got. Will not be returning to this guest house.

Seen better days

Booked this a year in advance due to it being a rugby weekend, We had 4 rooms, beds were comfortable and the location was good - that’s the plus. Rooms were very tired, with peeling wallpaper, stained carpets, mismatched furniture and curtains hanging off (room 4). Breakfast was basic - cereals, yogurts, fruit and toast, the dining room was also needing an overhaul. It’s a shame as the host was welcoming and the building could be lovely. Expensive for what we got.
