More about the hotel
Should be called Pestana Paradise, it's all about the location! oh and the staff :-)
From the moment we arrived until the moment we left nothing was to much trouble for the staff, a nice bottle of fizz chilling in ice when we arrived, just what we needed after our journey. The room was perfect for us, yes a little dated but very clean and has everything you need, there is a small hob but we never used it, the fridge and kettle were the most important things for us. Our room (305 if I remember correctly) was in the tower with fantastic uninterrupted sea views, absolutely stunning. We did have a couple of evening meals which were okay, nothing special but more than acceptable, breakfast on the other hand was fantastic, fresh fruit, ham and cheese, pastries and a cooked breakfast, plentiful coffee from the machines and occasionally even champagne was available. The hotel is at the bottom of a fairly steep hill, but right at the start of the Lido with an ice cream parlour less than 2 minutes walk from the entrance, pool was good with plenty of loungers and loads of jealous people clearly wishing they had booked this hotel. There is a spa but we never used it so can't comment on the various treatments offered. Would we return, YES, without a second thought.
A welcome Return
We recently returned to this hotel where we had spent a very happy holiday last year. It is unusual for us to return to the same country twice - Madeira and Malta being the exceptions. We have stayed in other hotels in Madeira but none to compare with the Pestana Palms for location, price and service. The hotel block could not be built any nearer the sea and this year our room was even closer, From our balcony we experienced amazing sunrises and sunsets and the many cruise ships on their way to and from Funchal port. Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious with a seating area and sofa as well as a table and two dining chairs. True it could do with some updating but for us it had all we required. The kitchen area is a great attraction stocked with kettle, fridge, two electric rings and ample china, glasses etc. We enjoyed many a snack/lunch enjoying the view from our balcony with food from the local Pingo Doce supermarket just across the road. We ate at the Bistro three times including an excellent 5-course Valentines Meal which was good value and the service provided by Luis and his colleagues on a busy evening was excellent. The hotel is well placed to walk into Funchal and is surrounded by a host of excellent restaurants serving a wide variety of food. In fact we have never had a bad meal on Madeira. We cannot praise the staff highly enough - so courteous, friendly and willing. This applied to everyone from the staff on reception to the cleaners. The aforementioned Luis not only served at the restaurant but worked at the bar and we have rarely seen anyone with the energy and enthusiasm that he showed for his work. From speaking with other guests we got the impression that many return frequently to the Pestan Palms and we will certainly be joining them in the future.
Great location, Relaxed atmosfere, beautiful suroundings
We stayed for at a week in a one room studio on the third floor facing east, which meant morning sun, sea view and no noise from the pool area. The apartment was clean and well equipped, though a bit worn. The staff is friendly and accommodating, but in no way pushy. The community areas are well kept and beutyfull.
Dinner on a “dine around” from another Pestana hotel.
Food was very disappointing, waiter was very rushed although only a small number of diners.Menu seemed promising but standard of cooking and presentation needs to be raised considerably.Other diners appeared to be subdued which was perhaps an indication that they similarly disappointed.
Friendly welcoming place to stay
Travelled in February 2020 and stayed for one month. Good location if you have mobility problems Needs updating desparately if you want to maintain the loyal customer base you enjoy as it appears many customers have being going for many years
