Not a hotel with friendly staff

I booked an event space at this property for a baby shower for 1PM-4PM for Nov 6th. The GM confirmed with me in advance that the room would be available from 9AM-1PM for setup & decorating and let me know that proof of vaccine would be required for all guests. She didn’t discuss the details, but I assured her that all guests would be notified and are double vaccinated. Nobody in our group is an anti-vaxxer and everyone follows NS public health protocols. When I entered the hotel person working at counter checked my proof of vaccine and told me where the event space was but didn’t provide me with anything to indicate to other staff that I’ve provided my proof and can be on the property. I go to the room and it’s a mess. There’s food on the table and floor and half empty cups and bottles of pop are on the tables. I don’t say anything to the staff and just start unloading my vehicle that’s filled with decorations, games, etc. On my way in, the same staff member stops me and says that she forgot to provide me with a wrist band that’s needed to show other staff members that I’ve provided proof of vaccine. She puts it on and continue to unload my vehicle. I mention this to one of my friends and she brings up the topic with the GM, that there should be signage at the front to let all guests know they need to check in at the counter and get their wrist band. The GM waves that off as unnecessary. At around 10:15 I go up to the counter as the room is still a mess and hasn’t been cleaned yet. We can’t start decorating and organizing the room, so I go to the front counter to talk to the GM and mention that the room needs to be cleaned, there isn’t enough tables & chairs (these requirements & the # of guests were discussed previously). I immediately notice that her mask does not fit and it’s below her nose. I don’t mention anything since maybe she doesn’t have a mask that fits correctly. She seemed annoyed to speak with me and assures me that the room will be cleaned in the next hour. I notice that she’s irritated and inquire, she lets me know that some staff members had not shown up for work. I apologize that she’s dealing with that and I go back to the room. The room finally gets cleaned and we’re down to the wire to have it ready for 1 PM for when the guests were to arrive. Guests start arriving and almost everyone is wearing a wrist band. The baby shower is under way and people are either purchasing a drink from the bar or from the non-alcoholic drinks that we brought. Multiple people asked me what the protocol was for wearing the mask. ‘Do we wear them at all times? Only when we walk out of the room? Etc.’ I couldn’t give them an answer as I didn’t know, and the GM nor did any of the staff provide us with the guidelines for the property. At around 3:30 PM the GM walks into the room to check up on things, overhears one of the guests speaking Arabic and aggressively marches towards her telling her that she needs to wear her mask unless she has a drink in her hand (which was never discussed with me or was this information provided to any of the guests) and that she needs to be wearing a wrist band (which her staff forgot to provide her with during her check in, she did produce her proof of vaccine as well as her ID). Multiple people in the room did not have a drink in their hand nor their mask on, myself included. The guest questions the approach in which the GM took to bring up this topic and the GM retaliates by pointing her finger at the guest and accusing her of not following covid protocols. Some curse words were exchanged, and the GM begins to yell that the guest needs to be removed from the property otherwise the police would be involved. This is when I overhear the yelling and I walk over, try to calm the GM down when she wanted to continue yelling in the event space in front of all the guests. I ask her if we could speak outside, we did and she insisted that the guest be removed, which I complied with as to not create further escalation. The GM walks back into the room, locks the bar, and stands there for the remaining time leering at everyone. Since this makes everyone uncomfortable, everyone begins to leave early. I’ve talked to multiple different guests and every single one of them has agreed that the approach taken by the GM was grossly unprofessional, unkind, and it could’ve been handled much better. Multiple people at the event did not have their masks on and were not drinking anything but she specifically targeted a Lebanese person speaking Arabic in the room. I don’t know if the GM is racist, but I don’t understand why she didn’t speak to anyone else at the event except for this single guest. Multiple people have noted that when they walked into the property the GM was not polite and did not possess an air of professionalism. One of my guests is an African Nova Scotian and was greeted with an ‘what’re you doing here?’. How is that any way to greet any guest? If you look through the negative reviews here and you’ll see the GM reply and gaslight the negative reviewers. Even if my guest was in the wrong (which she wasn’t because the staff failed to provide her with a bracelet and failed to describe the covid guidelines for the event) the issue that I’m pointing out is that all of this could have been avoided and could’ve been handled better. Specifically, for the reviews, I don’t understand where in a hospitality setting, why the person running a business page wouldn’t reply with kindness and understanding for the bad reviews. Instead, you get pages of defensive gaslighting and misinformation being spouted by this property. Absolutely save your dollars and reserve your nights and events at a different property. The GM at this location should be ashamed of her behaviour. This is not an isolated event, if you read through the other negative reviews they all point to this specific GM being defensive, impolite, and uncouth.

Worst manager

Worst experience, worst hotel, and the worst manager I've ever encountered. Carmella is the worst person to ever be in a position like that. Part 1- I was an hour late (2pm) showing up to the baby shower due to my job. I approached the counter with my ID and Vax papers, showed it to a woman at the counter and asked where the party is. She informed me it was on level C when you go in the elevator. Part 2- Around 3:30 (party ends at 4) this woman with the rudest tone says "where's your bracelet?!, how did you get in?!" I, very politely said Part 1. She goes on about how that is not possible because herself and another lady were the ONLY two people working. While both of them are standing at the baby shower (I'm guessing customers were checking themselves in alone) I walk over to my table to grab my information to show her again. As I'm walking I said "you know, you could of approached me in several ways and asked nicely because your tone is very rude". She didn't care. Then, she started pointing her finger in my face saying "IF YOU'RE NOT HOLDING A DRINK YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE YOUR MASK OFF, PUT YOUR MASK ON IF YOU'RE NOT DRINKING!" I said "nobody in here is wearing a mask right now, and they're not holding drinks". After all this happened, I walk back over to her and asked if there's someone above her I can speak with, with a grin she said "nope". I called her some names in a low tone voice so the kids at the party didn't hear. And she asked me to leave. I gladly left. Apologized to my family and left. As a person with previous experience as a manager, there's no shape or form I would of spoken to a customer/client that way. There was 25 people at this party and every single person said she was very unpleasant to deal with.

HIGHWAY NOISE

Hotel is typical Holiday Inn Express. Front desk was friendly, helpful and Covid safety precautions performed. Room was what we expected and was fine. However, the highway noise was non-stop and loud (even with the window closed). On our 2nd night, someone's car alarm was setting off every 5 minutes. We ended up moving to another hotel in Halifax proper.

I was a bit worried about the hotel as the price was lower than other similar hotels and some of the reviews were not great. But the hotel was great. Modern and clean. No maid service due to Covid but the front desk was helpful and would exchange towels, etc. All round great experience.

BROWN water

Went to take a bath after a long drive and the water ran brown. Filled up the tub and the water is brown! No discount and no warning of their water issue! The water is brown! It never runs clear. Who wants to bath in dirty water? Saw a review fro. March that said the same thing. Brown Water issue and no refund!
