Disappointing and overpriced.

This was our last stop on our holiday around the UK so we decided to treat ourselves-or so we thought!
We spent £150 for bed and breakfast for two so you could say that our expectations were high.
We arrived early however as we couldn’t check in until 4pm(it said 3pm on the website) we just popped in to use the toilets and to let them know our car was in the car park.
From the outside the hotel looked grand and the foyer looked impressive. We were impressed and couldn’t wait to check out our room.
Harrogate itself was lovely. It was our first visit and we really loved it.
We got back to the hotel and after some confusion over our booking we managed to check in.
Our room was supposedly a superior double. We were disappointed to say the least.
Small bed and it didn’t particularly look refurbished. The layout was poor, dirty mirrors with fingerprints on, dusty furniture. Dirty paintwork throughout the hotel in fact.
The tea and coffee was in a plastic bag with polystyrene cups and disposable stirrers!
Every other hotel we’ve stayed in has had proper cups and spoons even the Travelodge (which was better than The Cairn and less than half the price!) Terrible.
We complained and were moved to a different room which was slightly better although there were still dead flies on the windowsill to greet us!
I’d have expected to pay half the price for what we got.
Don’t be fooled by the outside appearance.

We had initially booked as part of a group, but decided to stay an extra night so we could see more of the town. That was a process easily arranged which was a great relief. The booking staff were very helpful and got everything sorted for us very quickly. The hotel is in a great location, only a few minutes walk into town (it is slightly uphill for the return walk though). There is a large car park and nice grounds to sit outside for a drink or sandwich etc on a nice day. The food from both the bar and the restaurant was brilliant. There is lots of variety and plenty of options for vegetarians (like me) and vegans. Our room was on the 2nd floor and was really nice. It was at the back of the hotel so was very quiet; it was spotlessly clean and really spacious - couldn't fault it at all. There are COVID arrangements in place at the moment which mean that housekeeping staff don't enter your room during your stay. Towels can be changed every day simply by leaving them outside your room. This also applies to having the bin emptied too. Every day the refreshment tray supplies are replenished by leaving a bag by the door. This arrangement worked well and we've got to admit we quite liked it. Some of the public area décor could maybe do with a lick of paint here and there, as some parts are looking a bit tired (that was the only aspect that stopped us awarding 5 stars). All the staff we encountered during our stay were very helpful, efficient and friendly. All in all we had a very enjoyable stay and are looking forward to our next visit. Thank you to all at the Cairn Hotel for all your hard work.
Filthy and completely unprofessional

First attempt: Off to a great start when 15 minutes past check-in (15:15)I foolishly attempted to check in to my room only to be told “you won’t be checking in until after four as we had a late linen delivery” no apologies, just that’s the way it is. What type of hotel has only o e set of linen? I was then told I could get a drink from the bar (not complimentary) or he could direct me anywhere I wanted in town. No consideration that I had just driven for 2 hours to get there, was wearing shorts and a t shirt and was dragging an overnight case, or that I had any plans to meet friends at 16:30.
The bar: At the bar there was one person in front of me who ordered a coffee a glass of wine, after 10 minutes of pacing up and down behind the bar they were told that the bartender was new, and didn’t know how to make coffee and that there was no one around to ask for help!!! Finally it was my turn, “a pint of lager please”, after three attempts to fill a glass pouring foam into a nearby sink I finally got my 3/4’s of a pint, it tasted like bleach/pipe cleaner. I didn’t drink it!
Second attempt: just before 16:00 I thought that I would head back to the reception desk in an attempt to check-in again! The queue at this point was already to the door! It was becoming unlikely that I was going to meet my friends at our agreed time. Upon check-in I was provided with a sheet of paper that told me all of the things that they weren’t available because of COVID-19. I asked to book for breakfast and was told that it’s fully booked, and that was it. I finally checked in at 16:45 receiving no apologies, no curtesy anything.
The Room: I was so relieved to finally be in my room an hour and half after arriving and already late to meet my friends, that I overlooked the fact that it decor was a little dated even if I wrote this review in the 1990’s, and until the following morning I didn’t realise just how filthy it was. In a pandemic it was filthy!!! How can this be allowed?
Conclusion: if you are planning to stay in Harrogate avoid this place like the plague unless you have your own hazmat suit and no itinerary! The staff were useless and they simply don’t care about customers. I’m sure that it won’t be a surprise but for me never again!
Fawltey Towers would be better
