Charming Guesthouse let down by staff

Reviewed 14 october, 2022

Having stayed here previously multiple times in the 80's and early 90's, I was looking forward to revisiting the property to re-experience the charm and time capsule of this 1930's style Guesthouse. Unfortunately, the excitement came crashing down as soon as we stepped foot in the lobby. The hotel sent a text message with instructions for check-in, but it was not seen. Regrettably this reliance by the hotel Management on this form of communication led to a very bad experience. Walking into the lobby, the reception desk was closed behind locked doors with no bell to ring or signage with a telephone number to contact if the desk was unmanned. There were not any other guests around also and all of this combined gave the perception that this was an abandoned property. The expected charm of a Mountains Guesthouse with a welcoming face was nowhere to be seen. I rang the hotel number from the website out of desperation and a terse message on the answering service alluded there would be a $50 charge if you called the number under false pretences and were not checking in today. A staff member thankfully finally answered the phone and explained a text message had been sent regarding entering the property from the rear of the Guest house. Unfortunately, Management did not take into consideration the guest experience if they were not to receive the text message and the abandoned guest house perception, they would be presenting to paying clients attempting / struggling to check-in at Reception. Unfortunately, our poor experience did not end with the above. Considering the lack of a note at Reception, it was a smack in the face to then see various notes scattered liberally around the property in regard to showcasing a dead guest, instructions on using the fireplace and a threatening note advising activation of the fire alarm would accrue a $1950 false alarm call out fee. Why did Management take the time to do all this, but could not provide a welcoming note in the lobby? Just further in regard to the dead ex-Guest, we thought it was very disrespectful to have a photo so faded of her, that you could not even see what she looked like. The photo had obviously been in direct sunlight for many years and Managements lack of quality control showed they were not concerned that Jessie's image would not be seen by guests using Jessie's lounge whilst staying at the property. Did someone not think to move the deceased guest photo when it was realised it was fading beyond recognition? Further issues involved water leaking all over the floor in the inner courtyard. Obviously, this was a safety issue, and we concerned an elderly guest may slip. The room itself was pleasant enough, but the shower pressure and temperature were not satisfactory. The 1930's style of the hotel is fantastic, but the bathroom sink appears to be from the 1980's and does not keep in the time period theme. The next Morning, the whole sad experience continued. We were not greeted upon entering the breakfast area and were not spoken to until we made contact. The 1930's theme that the hotel heavily relies on its website was again not quality controlled by having Led Zeppelin rock music banging away at breakfast. Management who are more in tune with their guest experience would have been playing more appropriate background music for breakfast in a 1930's styled property. All in all, it would have been expected that after COVID, that the Metropole Guesthouse would have been eager to provide a friendly and welcoming experience, but instead it felt they went out of their way to provide as minimal customer contact as possible. Being a Travel Agent, we have been fortunate enough to travel around the USA / Canada / Europe extensively this year in all various standards and types of accommodation. It was very disheartening to then stay at the Metropole Guesthouse to see this is the poor standard that is being offered in Australia at present. We hope these comments are taken onboard by the Metropole Guesthouse at 11-15 Gang Gang St, Katoomba, to lift the customer experience for a more friendly and pleasant stay.

Excellent Location for a short stay - good value!

Reviewed 6 october, 2022

We stayed a night here in a queen room. Very small room but comfortable, very clean and had all we needed. The location is excellent - able to wander to the shops and restaurants very easily. We were met with a lovely warm welcome and excellent check in from a man who i forgot to ask his name! We were fortunate to get a carpark on site - which is right near the back door and easy to unload. We paid for brekky afer reading the reviews but sadly had to leave earlier due to sickness!

Great Stay at The Metropole

Reviewed 2 october, 2022

We had an excellent short stay at the Metropole Guesthouse recently. Great value for money. Service from reception first class. We really enjoyed hanging out in the common areas. Plenty of seating & the gas heaters were certainly welcome. Already thinking about our next stay. We found the central location & accessibility very convenient.

Classic Guesthouse

Love this charming classic guesthouse. Conveniently located very near to Katoomba train station, about 100m away. The room was small but cozy and comfy. Heater was working well to keep us warm in the cold night. All essential amenities were provided. The hot breakfast was good, value for money. The special rooms like library, guest lounge and games room transform you back to the olden days. Great place to take photos.
