Poor service appears to be the standard at The Slaak Rotterdam

I am disappointed with my experience at the Slaak Rotterdam and will not return to this property. I am an experienced traveler and have been a Bonvoy Ambassador Elite for many years. I stay exclusively at Marriott properties with a primary focus on their luxury-level hotels. So I feel I have a strong basis for comparison. The Slaak Rotterdam disappoints, especially in comparison to similar luxury properties. At the Slaak, service appears to be an afterthought. The front desk staff unhelpful. My check-in experience was poor. While checking-in, I was asked to upgrade (pay) for breakfast. The attendant didn’t offer breakfast as my Elite amenity (which is available). When I brought this to her attention, she appeared surprised to see my status, apparently having not checked. I was also highly disappointed to have been turned away from the restaurant for dinner. Apparently a reservation is needed, even for hotel guests. While checking-in, I would have expected the attendant to ask if a dinner reservation would be desired. Instead, we were told there was not room to accommodate us for dinner; not even a sorry or apology. Lastly, our room (we booked two) wasn’t available until 18:30. Check-in is 15:00. It appears the hotel does not have their own room attendants and use a contract service. They didn’t start to clean our room until 18:00, even though the room was vacated at 16:00. Poor planning which negatively impacted our experience. Following on the theme of poor service, the front desk attendant made no attempt to accommodate the delay. A complimentary coffee or beverage would have gone a long way… With many choices of accommodation in Rotterdam, I would highly (!) recommend you do not stay at the Slaak; unless you prefer high room rates and poor service.
Stylish hotel in great location

What a gem of a hotel! So cute and stylish from first walking in. The staff was very kind. We had our two kids with us and they made up the pullout sofabed ahead of time for us. They also left us some nice treats - gummy candies shaped in famous buildings in Rotterdam, among other tasty snacks. The food was great. We ate dinner at the hotel and breakfast. Breakfast was really delicious with many options. Our room had a nice, large semi-private patio. I love having some outdoor space so this was a nice touch. Clear view of neighbors on each side with just a little fence in between but no big deal to us. Only odd thing is parking - it’s under the grocery store and was kind of hard to navigate to the hotel from there!
Great boutique hotel that pays homage to its origins

I genuinely enjoyed the homage that Slaak pays to its origins as a newspaper office, with the industrial architecture, scattered elements in menus (even the restaurant napkins!) to its origins as a newspaper office, the conference rooms etc. Very modern hotel too, with care put to ensuring that there were workable tables with power outlets in case you're here on a business trip like I was. The "loft" rooms featured windows that can be opened and a (small) balcony for fresh air. I find that good vs bad hotels really shine when they need to deal with non-standard requests, and that was certainly the case for me as I caught Covid-19 during the trip and chose to isolate in the hotel for an extended period. The hotel staff were very understanding and I was able to minimise contact/request via the Marriott Bonvoy app for any requests. Location is in walking distance of quite a few nice Rotterdam bars and restaurants.

Fantastic experience, one of our best experience in the Netherland. Location: Great, close to the city center, you can easily walk there in 15 min. Next to the hotel is a supermarket Lidl. Room: Stylish, we had the highest floor with a balcony Breakfast: Fantastic, great egg benedict:-) Leisure facilities: We used only a gym and it was ok. Lack of hospitality and service at The Slaak Rotterdam

I have seldom been treated with a lack of hospitality and service as in my experience with The Slaak Rotterdam: After making a booking approx. a year before arrival, my booking was cancelled 3 days before arrival by the hotel. After contacting The Slaak Rotterdam I was told that my reservation was cancelled due to the fact they were overbooked, since my reservation (again made 1 year in advance) was not yet paid for they decided to cancel mine. The next day I found out that they were not overbooked after all, but offered the same room for a price almost triple of my original price. My attempts to contact The Slaak Rotterdam for a reasonable solution, they did not respond in any way. I felt 'hung-out-to-dry' three days for spending a weekend in Rotterdam, again never been so disappointed in a company which supposed to be in the hospitality business.
