Promising hotel, but let down by Services and saved by Quality of Food

Reviewed 2 february, 2017

Participated in company workshop for 3 days. The location and view is scenic from its position. The hotel and restaurant have been refurbished recently providing a cosy, relaxed, and cool ambience. However, there are two building structures where only the main structure has been renovated. The other where I had a room and most of my coworkers was evidently dated in the 60s/70s and screaming for a complete renovation. There were hoeles and stains on the carpet. Quality of furnishings were very cheap, amenities very basic. The bathroom was so small I could not sit on the toilet properly. The bed was quite comfortable and I did sleep reasonable well. The TV is nostalgic harking back to the last century!!! The hotel given its size had little other amenities with only a wood-fired outdoor jacuzzi situated in a position with an amazing panoramic view of Emmental, but it was not used. WiFi is non-existent. I repeat non-existent except in the bar!!! - Mentioned this to the the service staff with the reply, '..... we are at above 1000 meters so WiFi is not reliable!' .. or similiar words. The restaurant looked promising with a chef/owner. Though the proposed menus were limited (probably by design) over the 3 day for lunch and dinner, the level of cooking needed was simple and unimaginative. However, the standard of presentation and taste was overall very good and I would come back as patron for the restaurant food. The service and logistics was poorly designed and executed. As a group of 20-24 people, we were squeezed into room which the waiters could hardly pass with only one entry and exit. Serving was a long-einded affairs with those served first ad cold dishes when the last person was served, everytime. Basic condiments and breads were never available and only after the starter/salads arrived. This is a very basic service, having coming from a restaurantuer background. Even then only small quantities were served. The first evening was clearly without the owners being present, as the two waiters were clearly stretched and stressed with our party the only guets in the hotel!!!! - and were not very professional. Services markedly improved from the 2nd day with owners' presence. Services improved with attention and care and maintained a good level of professionalism unlike the first day. Would I comeback to stay at the hotel in its current state, no. But, if renovated in the style as the main buiding, then a sure yes.

Great view but very very dated room

Reviewed 6 november, 2015

I'm only rating the hotel, not the restaurant. View from the room was great, nothing about htat. But the room was very dated, things were almost falling apart, carpet will never be clean again, wifi wasn't working in the room. Every room has its own balcony but mine was shared which was a bit funny, getting out the balcony door and staring right at somebody else's bed. Breakfast wasn't enormeous but lots of local products, which is great. Apparently they're renovating the rooms 2 pieces per year, so be sure to demand one of those. We were in a group so there weren't enough of those for everyone.

Nice view and great food

Reviewed 6 august, 2008

We booked a superior room which was in a building next to the main building. The room has been recently refurbished and everything looks very new and clean. Also the bathroom was very clean - in fact one of the cleanest I ever met in a hotel. The eiderdowns on the beds were also excellent and I loved the fresh smell of the linen! Food was excellent and not expensive for what they offered. Service in the restaurant was very friendly and perfect. Breakfast is a typical Swiss buffet with Muesli, flakes, fresh fruit salad, some dried fruits, a bit of salmon and meat and a range of cheese. There were two or three types of bread and different fruit juices. The only negative aspect: Smoking in restaurants is still allowed in this area of Switzerland. Even though they offer dinner and breakfast in a smoke free environment some tables are next to the smoking area. Also the reception area smelled rather smoky even though the outside door was open all day.
