Convenient Hotel in the Historic City Centre
It was an interesting experience being in Lisbon and staying at the Hotel Mundial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having stayed in Lisbon on previous occasions a little way outside of the historic centre, I found it much more convenient to be in a hotel so central. Considering the restrictions on travelling during the pandemic, it was interesting to find that the hotel appeared to be very full. Mask wearing was mandatory throughout public areas and temperature checks of guests and other visitors were routinely made on entering. My room itself was of an average size with efficient air conditioning and although it overlooked a busy road, it was quiet with the windows closed. Mini-bar, room safe and plenty of wardrobe space was provided. Very wide range of English language TV channels as well as many other languages. Bathroom was small, making it awkward moving around (my knees were pressed hard against the side of the bath when sitting on the toilet seat!) but I was pleased to find that it contained both bathtub and shower. I was disappointed to find that two single beds were provided instead of a double bed as requested – although I was aware that this was subject to availability. On querying this at the front desk, I was told that they had no double bed rooms available for that week but they arranged for the bedside table between the beds to be relocated and the two single beds placed side by side. I also mentioned that the shower head holder was broken and they quickly arranged for maintenance staff to repair it. There was another issue with a small amount of water seeping up from the bathroom floor when draining the bathtub, which I had to soak up with a towel and although I reported the problem it was not fixed during my stay. The hotel had a very attractive large ground floor lounge/bar area but unfortunately due to the pandemic, the bar was not open. The rooftop bar was open however and it was extremely pleasant to sit out there with a view of the city. The hotel has a restaurant on one of the highest floors providing panoramic window views for which it was necessary to make a reservation for dinner. In an age of ubiquitous casual wear it made a change to be able to dress up for the occasion and it was good to see standards upheld on seeing a couple turned away when they tried to walk in wearing shorts! Because of the pandemic I wasn't expecting a breakfast buffet but a welcome and extensive buffet of hot and cold items was provided with the food served by hotel staff standing behind the buffet counter. Finally, all the staff I encountered were extremely pleasant and efficient. Overall despite some initial issues with the room I had a most enjoyable stay at the Mundial.
Disappointing
Room without air conditioning Parking spots available for people that go to the bar even not staying in hotel and no spot available for me staying there.so + 13€ per night on parking nearby Breakfast not available for take away Check in friendly and positive and after really bad service
Beware of the crazy mask supporters
The staff only cares whether you were a mask instead of providing a decent service to customers! Won’t recommend if you wanna stay somewhere without being harassed by the staff! Staff will just yell at you from across the room if they see you without one! Just unprofessional and rude!
Good hotel, excellent location
We visited during the covid-19 restrictions so this review reflects the hotel during that period. It may be different at other times. Our temperature was checked on arrival and each day we returned to the hotel. The luggage was thoroughly cleaned. We had to wear masks at all times in the hotel. Even in restaurants except when sat down. That meant when going up to the counter for breakfast. Limited access to lifts as well. The hotel seems to be in different sections so we had to use one lift to go up to a corridor that we had to walk across to get to another lift to where our room was situated. A bit of a pain. Rooms were fine. Nothing special but very clean and big beds. Everything you would expect. The bottle of water is not complimentary. The breakfast buffet is average. it is advertised as continental but they do serve eggs and bacon. You go to the service area and a member of staff serves you to restrict people getting too close to each other. We were able to eat breakfast on the sun terrace. it was too early for sunshine (shadow) but was nice to have breakfast outside. There is a rooftop terrace. Difficult to find as the lifts dont always work to get there. We did go up one day during the day but too hot to stay there. Chairs are not that comfortable. We did try the main restaurant on our first day. There was a special offer of three courses, plus a glass of wine, for 19 euros. The setting is stunning as you are on the 7th floor with excellent views across the city. However, the food was awful. I would not recommend this restaurant at all. The normal prices are very high and if I had not had the offer, I would have been very disappointed.
Five Stars for Paulo Sanchez
The view is perfect. There is always some relaxing background music or live music on the rooftop. Thanks to the waiter paulo sanchez. He is great, very attentive! Done a great job. The prices are ok for a rooftop bar
