Lovely pub and gardens, thats the good bit now the food. My partner had soup and it turned up cold in a small bowl and half full. I had whitebait, deep fried until they didnt exist. Main courses Sea Bass with crushed potatoes and braised cherry tomatoes. Sea Bass very dry and void of taste. Crushed potatoes.........well reheated from the day before I reckon and braised tomatoes fit for a salad, little heat applied. Partner had Veggie Lasagne, very dry, little veggie content and taste. The menu is extensive but there is very little fresh food. I would recommend culling the menu, 4 starters & 4 mains, fresh and cooked to order. Such a shame for a pub in a lovely location.
What a hidden gem

From my first contact with Mark on the phone to my stay here it was excellent best Guinness in Dorset , lovely friendly staff beautiful location and what a room for the money . The evening meal was superb and busy always a good sign. The place was full of character , breakfast was excellent covid rules were very good. I was traveling by motorbike and Mark arranged special parking to keep it safe.
We will return thats 100% guaranteed .
Beautiful pub, but.....

We thought we might come here for dinner so went in to view the menu. The menu looked pretty inviting, but sadly the landlord could not have been less so - we felt extremely unwelcome. We left. Pity, as it could have been a great experience.
Don't bother, save your money.

Me and my boyfriend were glamping in the area so thought we would try this pub as it was in walking distance. Big mistake, I had the lasagne and my boyfriend had the risotto on the specials board. They were both really dry and over cooked. You could of filled the holes in the wall with the risotto and I couldn't get a knife through some of the lasagne. The only good thing was the nachos sharer as you got loads of toppings. Wouldn't go here again.
What a fantastic Pub!

I stayed at The Crown for 3 nights on a business trip last weekend. Due to COVID the pub sadly wasn’t open, but Monty, The Landlord was so welcoming and hospitable I can’t fault the customer service from the team, he even called me on my long drive down to see if I wanted the kitchen to stay open late for food on my arrival, which I found really considerate. I would call him every evening before about my breakfast request for the following day, and he would deliver it to the room at the exact time requested. Making up a lovely packed lunch, when I started work before the kitchen opened. I was the only guest during my stay due COVID and I found the village truly charming. The rooms themselves are pleasant, clean and the beds very comfy. The bathroom has a nice shower and the decor in keeping with the links to Thomas Hardy. There’s even chickens in the garden, so you’ll know where the eggs came from! On Sunday I was recommended by a work colleague to have Monty's cooked breakfast... wow!! What a fantastic feast, the full English went down a treat and the sausage and bacon particularly delicious. Overall I travel a lot with work and it’s by far the nicest pub I’ve stayed in. I will try and return with my family one day. Thank you Monty and team. You’re 5 star in my book!
