A lovely classic hotel

We choose to stay here after attending a family event a few years ago and also, it was perfectly positioned for our purposes of visiting the Peak District and seeing family in the local area. Although we were unaware when we booked, on arrival we found that that the hotel is currently being refurbished. The general areas of very good, clean and very comfortable. We were initially allocated a room called the Chinese Suite, which was a lovely shape and size but very tired looking, with a threadbare carpet, a bit of a wonky bed. After a dreadful nights sleep on a very soft mattress and the discovery of the reason for the wonky bed, which was a missing wheel! We complained to Reception, who apologised profously and offered us a choice of rooms and then upgraded us at no extra charge to a recently refurbished room which was lovely and is actually the Bridal Suite....! Without exception all the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The breakfast menu is of a reasonable quality but the menu is very limited and repetitive but they are happy to swap things around. But some additional variety like some fresh fruit and yogurt etc would be good, as not everybody wants cooked breakfasts and carbohydrates every morning. However we had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend staying here but ask for a refurbished room.

Just had a lovely weekend break at Makeney Hall Hotel.
The hotel staff were very helpful & friendly especially Keighley.
Our suite was clean, spacious and we had great views over the countryside.
We had an evening meal & breakfast and both were very good.
Very good hotel.

We booked a two-night stay including breakfast and one dinner with a number of other members of the family and had a excellent stay. In total we numbered 7 adults and 2 children, in 4 rooms.
When approaching the hotel, it is important to be aware that Google Maps anounces that the hotel is on the opposite side of the road - so be aware of this, and look out for the hotel sign (see website). There are plenty of parking spaces - the hotel is used as a venue for weddings as well as a hotel.
The staff at the reception at the hotel give a very warm welcome, and in our case, had put us all in rooms close together, which was really helpful. The rooms vary in size, but all provide enough room. Our beds were very comforable.
The hotel was the childhood home of a famous industrialist in the eighteenth century - Strutt, and there are references in the house to him, and if you go to Derby you can visit the Art Gallery/museum - there you can see a painting of Strutt by Joseph Wright of Derby - there is a whole room of his paintings there.
For what was once a famiy home, the building is very large indeed, and there are lounges as well as all the bedrooms, and a large dining room surrounded by a beautiful garden. Some aspects of the house are quite tired (eg the carpet), but this does not detract from being a lovely place to stay. There is a lift, but it doesn't reach all the rooms - if you have any mobility problems it would be a good idea to tell the hotel before you arrive, as most rooms can be reached with the lift, but not all.
After breakfast, the children would slip out into the garden - there are lots of rabbits on the lawn, and they really enjoyed exploring what is really a very large garden - with us of course!
Breakfast was very good, and the staff were extremely helpful - all run according to Covid guidelines, and we enjoyed eating and looking out onto the garden.
We had one dinner here, and there was a good menu - we all felt we had had a very good meal indeed, with a range of options, and portions were large.
If you want to go to a local pub while you are staying in the hotel, you can walk to the end of the drive, then cross the road and go up a lane to a pleasant pub with a lot of seating outside.
I would stay here again - we had a very pleasant visit.

We have stayed here on numerous occasions and was our go to place to treat our daughters and son in law to an overnight stay. We are never disappointed, the staff are so welcoming and friendly. The location is perfect for a nice walk into Belper. We like to visit the King William and Holly Bush pubs.
Fantastic all, thank you
