A Great Option for a One Month Stay in Chiang Mai
Reviewed 17 august, 2022
Let me just start with this... Old City Wall Inn is a tremendous value and I highly recommend you book a stay here if you are travelling to Chiang Mai. This review will currently only cover my very initial experience as I have just checked in. As always, I will provide updates based upon my continued experience. I just moved to Chiang Mai and my condo at the Astra will not be ready for approximately a month so my little sister who already lives in Chiang Mai was kind enough to find a couple one month stay options that are reasonably close to my future condo. Within those options, I chose Old City Wall Inn primarily for the following reasons in the order listed: 1) Bathtub - I have always opted to live in places that have bathtubs. It is an increasingly rare feature, but something I place a very high value on. 2) Location - Being close to walking street is great and there is no shortage of dining and entertainment options. It is also quite close to my future condo and my little sister already has a condo there so it is nice to be close to her. 3) A big white wall - perfect for watching movies from my portable projector and there is a couch ideally located to comfortably watch the movies. I chose the smaller and cheaper room without a kitchen because of the beautiful white wall. 4) Price - I was quite pleasantly surprised at what a great value it is. When my little sister told me the price, I was actually shocked at how good the price was. I was willing and expecting to spend double what I actually ended up paying. My little sister set up the reservation the same day that I checked in paying 1,000 baht to hold the room until I arrived and paid the remaining balance as well as an approximate 3000 baht deposit which is perfectly reasonable. My check in experience was very quick, pleasant and convenient. I was asked to provide a copy of my passport prior to arrival which surely helped to speed up the check in process. It was a pleasure meeting Golf, who I spoke with prior to arrival and the staff without exception seemed polite and competent. As I am staying for an entire month, there was a longer than normal amount of paperwork that had to be filled out, but as an attorney, I have a strange love of contracts and it did not bother me. This was also all ready for me when I arrived and so I had zero wait time for the preparation and execution of the documentation. The room is on the second floor and although I would have preferred a room with a street view, the rear facing room is probably a bit more quiet. There is a balcony that overlooks a garden and there is a sign posted forbidding smoking which is absolutely fine with me since the smell of cigarettes does have a tendency to permeate into the room even if smoked on a balcony. The only 3 things that I find so far to be somewhat lackingt: 1) The bathtub drain stopper does not hold water in the bathtub very long. The water leaks out rather quickly and as I previously stated how important an amenity I consider the bathtub to be, this is something that I fear will become an increasingly negative experience. 2) Electricity is charged separately and is billed at 9 baht per unit. This is a very minor issue but since I own a home in Bangkok and a condo in Chiang Mai, I know that this is almost double the rate I pay at my actual residences. Again this not a major issue but something to be aware of. 3) my safe doesn't work, but I am sure that can be resolved when I bring it up with the staff tomorrow. I rarely ever give 5 stars as I believe 4 stars is fantastic. Old City Wall Inn is between 4 and 5 stars and if I can somehow fix the bathtub issue (which is a BIG issue for me, maybe it would not bother you dear reader in which case 5 stars would be appropriate), I would increase the rating to 5 stars. As always, I will provide updates to provide as accurate a deacriptin of my experience since people always complain my reviews are so short. ^^
Amazing and accommodating stay!

My partner and I stayed here for the duration of our trip in Chiang Mai. The location was fabulous! Close to all of the night markets and really within walking distance of most common Chiang Mai activities. Staff were very accommodating and helped with all questions. We had booked 4 night stay and then took a night away to go to Pai before we returned and staff allowed us to keep our bags in the room free of charge! Keep in mind, this was during a slower time for travel in Thailand and may not be a possibility during other times of the year. Room and facilities were very well kept, clean, and safe. We did the laundry service which was inexpensive and convenient. I would recommend to anyone visiting Chiang Mai!

Arrived early and were allowed to check in early, thank you. Room was clean and spacious. Free water, always nice to find. Quiet room and comfy beds. Breakfast was nice too. Hotel staff could be a little more smiling and welcoming. Great location. There is a very nice little restaurant to the right of the hotel, 1 minute walk, great food.
Not for light sleepers

The room was quite spacious with a large king bed, mini fridge, tea/coffee maker, bottled water and snacks. As soon as we walked into the room, I could hear all of the noise from the street (about 3:00 pm in the afternoon). So that night I did not sleep well at all due to all of the noise and I even had earplugs in. The next day I asked the front desk if I could move to another room away from the street for the next 2 nights. They advised it would be more money because it was a garden view room. I didn't have a choice as I needed to sleep, so I paid the additional money. But in fact, it was not a garden view (see photo below). It helped a little, but realized that this is just a noisy hotel in general. The floors are tile, so you hear all guests walking in the halls. The doors are really thin, cheap bathroom doors that slam when closed. The windows are thin so all noise comes into the room. It is located right on the busiest street in Chiang Mai. The staff are really nice and the free breakfast was good.
Good for the location

Location is great for visiting most of the sites. We walked everywhere from the hotel, as weather was very cool at this time of the year. Except of course to the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep as that’s on the mountain. Room is very spacious and the breakfast is cooked to order. The cafe where it’s served has a very nice garden setting at the back. I enjoyed having breakfast there. The only thing I didn’t like is that the pillows & cushions smell as they are pretty old. The towels all look rather grey too. If they do a better housekeeping job, this hotel would be perfect. But the price is very reasonable.
