Not impressed with the new renovation and poor service

Reviewed 26 december, 2019

This Holiday inn Express at Xuanwu Lake was a local Chinese hotel (aka Siya Garden Hotel) that got rebranded as Holiday Inn Express. My stay experience was just average at best but sadly, customer service here is unacceptable. If this is how new Holiday Inn Express will be, then I need to find a new hotel chain. The Good: - Breakfast is pretty nice here, the spread includes a lot of duck dishs which you won't find at other HI Express. The Bad: - Room is quite small, smaller than most HI Express and space utilization is very poor. - The hotel was renovated using the 2nd generation HI Express Blue/Orange design language, but sadly, it left very little space for your luggage and there is no closet, but an exposed hanging rod... - No more writing desk with the Blue/Orange new design. The new desk is bascially a piece of plywood that extends cross the room that serve multiple purposes. What makes the issue unbearable is the fact they installed a safe under the "desk" plywood that took so much space and it left no space for you to sit and put your legs into. I bang my legs into this stupid safety box at least a dozen times during my stay and left me with some bruises. - Housekeeping throws out customer property. With many cities in the west phasing out plastic bottled water, I carry a reusable but high qulaity clear see-thru bottle. I left that bottle on the desk but it was thrown out along with empty water bottles in the garbage. I raised the issue immediately but the hotel handled the situation so poorly that that it required several calls to Customer Relations to get resolved. - Front desk staff are not very experienced. During my checkout, the process took incredibly long because the staff does not know how to process foreigner credit cards. I had to eventually ask him to get help before someone pointed out he used the wrong card machine. And here we are, with IHG promoting its own branded credit card. While I was excited to see a Holiday Inn Express with the latest blue/orange redesign, almost all aspects of my stay left me unimpressed.

Good budget hotel, friendly staff. This is a good place to stay in Nanjing, it is 4km from Sun Yat Sen mausoleum, and 6km from Nanjing memorial. The price was less than 300rmb/ 30 pounds for a family room. The room itself is tired, but the beds are soft, warm and comfortable. Parking is limited, but well organized.

No complaints

This hotel was exactly what we needed. Affordable, but still clean and nice. Pretty good location, we could always find a cab right outside. The breakfast was ok, seems on par with most I've had at Chinese hotels. We had a slight issue with communicating with the front desk staff, but no major problems.

A good basic business hotel

Reviewed 21 march, 2012

This is a good basic business hotel that is also suitable for tourists. Rooms are adequate and worth the price. Some frills missing, such as furnished bottled water. Easy to remedy by a three minute walk to a supermarket down Beijing Dong Lu 北京东路。Excellent breakfast that may be included in the price of your room or bought extra for 28 RMB. Close to bus stops, but not to the metro.
