Fun Hotel and Fun Location
Our top priority for any place, cleanliness.✔️ Second priority, quite. ✔️Gansevoort meets both requirements. Perhaps because the hotel has a hipster vibe, there didn’t seem to be that many families with kids which keeps the hallway noise down. Located in a very active area, the location is perfect for experiencing The City if you like the more historic and not the Times Square atmosphere. High end shops commingle with local coffee shops. Easy walking to many desirable neighborhoods for exploring. We get a room wIth a patio area to feel more connected to the city and it’s still quite. Staff is super attentive and willing to help with everything. Rooftop is AMAZING with views, restaurants, pool and a LOT of seating areas. Bar scene on the first floor very active but you can bypass and head to your room no problem. They have elevator operators for security which makes everything feel safe. This will always be our first choice when visiting NYC.
Convenient Hotel in the Meatpacking district
I was staying there for business and was out most of the time, so really only used the hotel room and none of the other services. Unfortunately it was way too cold for the pool which had a great view otherwise! Had chosen it mainly for the location and it worked out really well! Rooms are decent, though you can definitely feel you are in a 'party hotel'. Odd, large photographs of men and women stylized everywhere, also in the rooms. Otherwise rooms and bathrooms were perfectly fine. Not much to say otherwise.

Subpar digs in an above-par setting
I have never done a TA review, and don't like leaving negative reviews of businesses; however, my recent stay here merited me doing so. A couple weekends ago, I had to book a night last-minute for a downtown meeting, and chose the Gansevoort for my stay, based on its proximity to my meeting, and based on the luxe, upmarket brand perception. I just as well could have saved >$100 to stay in a cleaner, better appointed 2-star hotel. Check-in: on arrival, I was turned off by the lobby (dark w/ loud music in that strange way that hotels seem to think is appealing). I approached reception, and made eye contact with the receptionist (who was on the phone). After several minutes, he hadn't made a single gesture towards me (though we had made repeated eye contact and I was standing right in front of him with a suitcase!), nor did any of the other employees who appeared and disappeared. I also noticed how messy the reception desk was, cluttered with personal items and messy papers. My point is that between the total disregard to assisting me in checking in, the appearance of the reception area, and the experience of waiting in the unpleasant lobby for 10 minutes before being checked in, we were not off to a good start. Ambiance: The hallway to the room was SO oppressively dark, w/ loud clubby music, and smelled stale. It actually grossed me out; you cannot convince me that it gets properly cleaned with the lights all the way down. The room - The styling: Dated and tacky decor, furniture w/ visible wear was due for refresh years ago - The shower: As other reviewers have complained, the shower DOES NOT get warm, and I took a very cold shower (which, as a positive, definitely woke me up for my meeting) - The cleanliness: ----I went over to check out my AWESOME view, and found crumbs on the windowsill. ----The carpet was visibly dirty w/ a couple of stained areas (I wished I had slippers) ----The bedding did not look clean (may just be because it is old) ----One of the bathroom drawers had hair in it when I opened it Verdict: I will not be staying here again. I didn't check out the rooftop lounge (which is supposed to be the highlight of the hotel) but I don't feel the need to experience it. There are loads of places to stay in NY. This one is clearly resting on it's incredible location, and former posh reputation, but unless my stay was just a major fluke, I don't see how they will be able to continue attracting new guests.
