Great stay but won't stay again.
I have to say I was nervous after reading some of the reviews regarding this hotel and it was a mixed bag but despite that it was a great stay. We visited in February for my husband's 50th birthday for 6 nights, we opted for a superior room and requested a room with a bathtub as I knew we'd be doing a lot of walking and needed to relax and not all rooms have tubs. This hotel is very Art Deco old New York (lots of movies have been shot here) and the hotel opitimises this from it's marble floors to it's chandeliers and original features. The hotel rooms were in the midst of a much needed refurb as it's a bit tired. Positives: friendly reception/porters, lovely bar, nice looking restaurant, large comfy beds, flatscreen tv has lots of good channels, large rooms with a iron and ironing board in the room and the overall Art Deco feel in the main lobby is gorgeous. Negatives: there are too many different concierges who lack the knowledge expected for their role and one of which was downright conceited and acted as though it was a big inconvenience just to converse with us: despite never having visited before I had more knowledge than they did (did lots of homework on Youtube). The woman in the cafe is downright rude and whenever my husband visited she made a point of making him wait and served everyone in front of him. We were led to believe by the website we booked with that breakfast is free but it's not; you are issued with vouchers for a $12 discount in the cafe where you can redeem them for coffee and pastries but that is not a sufficient breakfast in my opinion and they are poor quality. The hotel also do not respond to email queries of which I sent several before arriving. This irritated me because there had a special request on one of them. FYI: The plugs aren't great so use the one on the desk lamp: some of your UK appliances such as hairdryer/hot air styler won't work in the US but hair straighteners will. The rooms had aircon that looked like it would fall off the wall any moment but worked fine and US tubs are much smaller than ours (knee height). There are no tea and coffee making facilities in the room and no mini bar or robes expected of a 4 star. (There is an independent coffee shop at the hotel entrance, that coffee is much better. There is a Clarkes and a Swarovski shop amongst others attached to the hotel. There is a gift shop but it's vastly overpriced. ) All of the above negatives I can deal with but my main bug bear is that they charge you $40 per night for Resort Fee (Tourist Tax) and $50 per night breakages fee. This added up to an extra $500! So bear this in mind if you are choosing this hotel based on price. The breakage fee is supposed to be refunded but we STILL have not been despite emailing the hotel. We did have a really good time in NYC but this was despite the hotel not because of it, which is a great shame as the hotel has so much potential and is right next to Madison Avenue, Grand Central Station and the main sights such as 5th Avenue, The Chrysler and Empire State and we would happily have chosen to stay again (forewarned is forearmed) but as the hotel have elected to keep our breakage fee we will stay elsewhere in future as it will work out the same price to chose a hotel that doesn't inflict these charges. If you do stay here, please pay your breakage fees in cash, get a receipt and ensure it is returned BEFORE you leave (literally insist you will wait whilst they check your room) because as you will see from the other reviews this is a common occurrence but I assume that as they see so many tourists they can get away with it because they won't see the majority again and they have a never ending supply of people to rip off. The next time we visit we will book a hotel without these fees but we WILL be making a stop here to get our breakage fee back: Roosevelt you have been warned.
Hays Travel Ltd and Hays Tour Operating at The Roosevelt Hotel
My son had to take my husband's place on the holiday. So immediately the BC charged me £579 as a "name change" without any explanation as to how this fee was arrived at. Still haven't got any explanation. To my understanding it helped Hays Travel with their VAT. John Hays isn't bothered, and my circumstance isn't covered in either the Terms and Conditions of either Hays Travel or their Tour Operator. The BC wasn't thorough or competent at the start.
This was the 3rd time visiting New York, wanted a older grand hotel this time and wasn’t disappointed. Our room was a standard room which was fine as we don’t spend a lot of time there. Bed was comfortable and had all we needed. The lobby was beautiful and has been used many times in films. As it was late November the Christmas tree in the middle was grand. Only downside was paying more tax when we arrived, we had already paid it when booked and 1st time we’ve had to do this. We hope to return in 2021

Worst hotel ever
Worst hotel ever in every sense of the word. My husband booked it as was rated a ls 4 star and It was in a convenient location. What a huge disappointment! It was dirty, the rooms were ugly, filthy, small and furniture way too old. Even the mirror was in the back of a small, terrible bathroom with no space to back up to see yourself as there’s a wall right behind it. As we complained they changed ours rooms twice and they were more of the same. Dust, rotten curtains, bad smell, old stained carpet and no room to put your clothes. The staff was rude, and quiet frankly I could feel the bad vibes. We left and booked another hotel where we could finally enjoy our stay in NYC.
