Better places to visit

Reviewed 26 november, 2022

Busted here while passing through. My family had previously been here and had recommended the carvery. Naturally I was all for giving it a go. I must have called at a bad time unfortunately. I had asked for an extra slice of meat (normally 2) but I was told it’s not possible. That was ok, i understand cost of living etc hits business as well. Thought to myself sure I can load of on the veg. I had asked for a bit of everything, the guy proceeds to put on a little scoop of everything available (plate wasn’t even half full with everything on). I had asked maybe for an extra roast potato or two. Again I was told this isn’t possible. I then asked for some gravy, again the smallest amount put on. Again I asked for a bit more, which I was ignored and the guy went on to serve the next person behind me. Service for the rest of my party (all ordered off menu) was very slow, in both taking the actual order and then serving it. Would much rather have spent our money on the kfc near here.

ITEMS STOLEN BY HOUSEKEEPING

Reviewed 4 november, 2022

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights while attending a family wedding. Unfortunately I had both CASH and a gift voucher STOLEN from my room which were gifts from the bride and groom. Both were in separate envelopes sat beside the kettle. On Sunday 30th October I had been in my room and had taken some cash from the envelope then left to go back downstairs. As soon as I was downstairs I realised I had forgotten something and returned to the room. Approaching the room I noticed that the door was open and 2 members of staff were stood in the room chatting. As soon as I entered the room they started to act busy. I thought it was a bit strange for housekeeping to be in the room at 3.45pm on a Sunday and had mentioned it to a few people when I returned downstairs. Before we checked out on Monday, once the cases were sat in the corridor I had a final check of the room to make sure nothing was left sitting. As soon as we were back home on Monday evening I realised both the envelopes were missing and knew where I had left them so was shocked I didn’t notice either- one being pink was hard to miss! Called the hotel and was told that house keeping said absolutely nothing had been left in the room and was assured they do a deep clean so anything left behind would have already been picked up. After I got off the phone call I realised that our child portable bed til was left behind so I called back to question how it wasn’t in lost property. I was transfer to a manager (Dean I think) who took my details and said would investigate it further with house keeping and call me back- he didn’t. I called the hotel again on Tuesday and spoke to another manager Paul who also said he would look into it further and call me back- he didn’t. I rang the hotel on Wednesday and asked for Paul who soon called me back. He said he was looking over CCTV and could see the staff entering the room and leaving it empty handed. Can’t imagine they would be as silly as to come out waving the cards above their heads!! He said he trusts his staff etc and happy for me to report to the police. Overall very disappointing response from the management team. I have reported it to the police and happy to take it further so that it does not happen to any other guests.

Great stay in the Canal Court Hotel

Reviewed 3 november, 2022

A wonderful stay in the Canal Court Hotel. From Check in to Room Service and Restaurant, the staff very friendly and helpful. The food in the Restaurant was exceptional. I have never been served such a large Rack of Lamb and my wife’s Stroganoff was a dish that I will have next time we go to Newry! My only niggle was that the pillows in the large bedroom we were allocated were to hard. I like fluffy type pillows. However, the bedroom toiletries were of a very good quality. For that reason (pillows only) I gave this review 4 stars instead of 5 stars

Wedding

Reviewed 3 november, 2022

I had my wedding at the Canal Court on the 1 October 2022 and cannot rave enough about the place. Every staff member was so lovely and helpful and went out of their way to make sure the day was smooth and stress free! Nothing was too big an ask! Breda is the star of the show there and an absolute wedding genius! Made for her job and puts you right at ease and is SO friendly! A genuinely lovely person! The accomodation was fab and the food was even nicer! We had a meal in the restaurant the second night and it was delish too! All my guests were raving about it and some even have booked already to re-visit! Will DEFFO be back! Thanks for making my day one of the best of my life!

Nice Hotel but Overpriced

Reviewed 1 november, 2022

We have stayed in the Canal Court hotel many times over the years. This was our second stay this year & we chose the Penthouse Suite for this visit. As we experienced noise issues on our previous stay, we were told that the Penthouse would be quieter. At no stage in the booking process or room description did I see that the Penthouse is accessed by stairs only & isn't disabled friendly. There was probably about 15 steps in total but the steps were very narrow & as we both have back issues, we found it tough carrying our cases up the steps. If we'd known that, we wouldn't have chosen this room & this is something that the hotel should highlight. The entrance door to the Penthouse leads to a small corridor that was a bit unkempt. The Suite was nice but the seating area definitely needed upgrading. The bedroom appeared to have been renovated but at 7.30pm before we went for dinner, we couldn't find the safe! Despite looking everywhere, we couldn't locate it. The bathroom was lovely. There are low beams in parts of the Suite & if you're over 5ft 8in, it's possible that you won't notice them as they are the same colour as the rest of the ceiling & you'll hit your head, which I did & ended up with a 2 day headache. I had pre-ordered Prosecco and Chocolates as it was the anniversary of our 1st date. On arrival at 3pm, while the Prosecco and chocolates were in the room, the ice bucket hadn't been left on a plate so the ice had melted onto the table and had destroyed the chocolates. When housekeeping came to replace the chocolates, I was told that we were expected into the room earlier, even though check-in was 3pm! We had lunch in the bar when we arrived & unfortunately when we got to the room, we'd been given a complimentary voucher for the carvery which had to be used by 3.15pm that day - so we never got to use it. We ate in the Old Mill Restaurant that night & while the food was nice, we found it very expensive for what we got. Breakfast the next morning was chaotic & while the hot food was nice, some of the continental breakfast items weren't replaced while we were there & when I queried about the croissants, I was told that they were coming. After 15 minutes of waiting, we gave up on them arriving! The biggest negative is the 11am checkout. The receptionist suggested that I speak with the Manager, which I did. While she was polite, I felt very dismissed by her which really put an ever greater negative on our stay. The hotel is in a good location but room prices are very expensive for what you get. In addition, the food in both the bar & the restaurant is very over priced. Overall, it was a disappointing and expensive stay! Not something we will do again for a while.
