They don't value the customers to much at this hotel clearly. I was made to wait intell she was done doing hair and taking to people about there day and doing hair then when she was done I was able to check in . Some of This staff at this hotel have attitudes that are just rude and cold .
Not what I expected in a budget hotel

I selected Howard Johnson because it was a Wyndham property and I remembered it grim my childhood. I also knew that I would only be there to sleep. It was very disappointing. The check-in clerk did not wear a mask at all. The shower did not work. There was a leak under the sink. The lighting was poor (I had to pin the curtains back to take a zoom call). Refrigerator needed defrosting (lots of ice build-up).
I knew it was a budget hotel, but I expected more.

Pool, breakfast, and workout center all advertised. I was informed after checking in that they were not available, with no explanation. Room was small, neighborhood a little seedy, but property had charm. Bed was comfortable.
This is a nothing short of a brothel slash crack house; anxiety producing and beyond stressful experience!

I am writing this review because I care about you--a stranger.
DO NOT STAY HERE.
It is filled with prostitution, pimps, drug dealers and junkies. No joke. I am pretty sure there was a pimp patrolling the hallway. There were a few individuals that looked like skinheads staying there too. Look, I am a grown black man, who has seen a lot in my 50 years on this earth, and even I was beyond nervous!
I checked in and out within minutes. I left so fast that I left my pillow. The male manager refused to refund me. But, I wasn't going to stick around to argue. The lost of $100 (or any amount) is not worth sticking around to file a complaint. I honestly ended up just driving around Portland at 9pm just looking for a safe neighbor. I ended up in Vancouver, WA around 10pm, where I gladly was ripped off for safety.
I am not using hyperbole here. Listen, truth is, I didn't think I was going to die. But, I did think that if I stayed I would be in physical danger and could conceivably physically ... I don't even want to go there. The skinheads that followed my every move from my car to the room was horrifying. I believe it was less than a 50/50 chance my car would have been broken into or at least "compromised."
The two women (one a minority like myself) that worked there were very kind. I felt really sorry for them. It was one of those times I wished I owned a business to hire them and take them out of that employment situation. I can't believe America has good people working in such stressful and dangerous institutions. I literally prayed for them last night.
This was by the the most stressful hotel experience I have had in my life. I have been to 48 of the 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and all over Europe and Asia.
The room reeked like a semen, pot, and cigars cocktail. The ceiling light was so dim that it had a horror film feel to it.
The website pictures had to be taken on opening day back in 1980 or 1970-something. The pool was boarded up, windows, carved with razors.
I called the 3rd party and told them how disappointed I was in them for even offering such a place and putting travelers, like myself, in such harm's way. Shame on and in them.
Shame on and in HoJo, Inc., for allowing this. Their CEO and executives should check into this place with their families for a week. There is no sense of pride. I will no longer book at HoJo, Inc. I cannot trust what I may end up with.
I write this because I don't want anyone to have to go through this. I am sad that we live in a country that produces this and has some that travel that don't have many other options.

Super shady business practice. Don't book ever. Prostitutes are everywhere. Terrible staff that are rude. Wore a dirty shirt and was absolutely the rudest to all in the checkin. They play the bait and switch on you. Say they don't charger tour card if you book from outside source and then double charger you and won't refund money.
