It grew on Us
This hotel was booked for us by Planet Cruise as part of a whole S American Package. It was represented as a FIVE star hotel, and that it certainly isn't. We were somewhat down hearted when we arrived, the welcome was fine as was the Foyer, but the whole place looked as if it needed a coat of paint and a good clean. No help with the bags was offered. Our double room on the first floor (second in US terms) was large, but rather dingy and the carpet definitely needed a good shampoo. It seemed a bit isolated so we went for the Supper in the restaurant, which was best got from the extensive buffet, with good choices and as much as you could eat, and we ordered a bottle of wine, which we consumed over the next days - it appears that selling a GLASS of wine is not normal. Over the next two days this hotel grew on us. The staff were friendly and helpful. Five Stars it ain't by any measure, maybe 3 or 4, but the swimming poor and outside is delightful, the staff really willing and smiling, and the beds were comfortable. Over the next days
Hotel in terrible shape; not even close to 5-star
I spend a couple of days at the Hotel Cataratas with a large family group (10+ people). I knew this hotel was in desperate need of a renovation since I had read the reviews here, but it was even worse than expected. What I liked: - Friendly staff - Outdoor area: Could also benefit from a renovation, but the hotel has very nice gardens, a tennis court and a decent pool (not 5-star quality though) - Mattress and pillow were good What I didn't like: - Nothing was improved since the 1980s: Carpets are old and smelly, there are wet spots on walls and ceilings, etc. - Poor quality breakfast - Inconsistent wifi I wouldn't stay here again, even at a low fare. There are better places to stay in Iguazú at every price point.
A complete disaster
We read all the bad reviews and booked it anyways as all other hotels were either sold out or very expensive (Gran Melia). Nevertheless, the hotel is a catastrophe, hence we checked out again after one night and booked ourselves to the Gran Melia, which was pure heaven and worth every cent. Rooms at Exe Catarates are shabby and poor. Carpets are dirty and ugly. There are huge scratches and holes in the walls. Surprisingly the bathroom was clean but the water pressure is not really working so water is more dripping out than floating. Breakfast ... well, you can‘t call this breakfast according to me. Everything looked so unappetizing and the breakfast room has the charm of a canteen. We had dinner there as we arrived very late. We were just hungry... nothing more to add. Sad thing: when checking out staff asked why and we explained. They just nodded and felt sorry, adding that the group won‘t invest. Do not stay there, under no circumstances. Just don‘t do it!
Safety hazard for small children!!!
We spent three nights at this hotel in January. One of the main reasons why we chose this hotel was the outdoor space and swimming-pool for our 5 and 7 year old children to enjoy themselves after visiting the waterfalls. The swimming-pool has a water slide that was immediately a favorite for the kids. Everything was going great until the path and staircase leading to top of the waterslide got wet and became dangerously slippery. Long story short, our 7 year old ended up in the local emergency room where he had to receive four stitches to close a deep cut on his eyebrow. Later, talking to the hotel manager about the accident, he seemed clueless, didn't offer any help and just mentioned casually that they needed to work on improving flooring and rails around the swimming-pool area. The lack of safety precautions taken by this hotel to ensure the safety of children on the premises is just unacceptable.
A trip to Granny's
We were four adults staying in this hotel for 3 nights in 2 double bedroom rooms. In all honesty, I can see that this Hotel used to be of a very high quality and possibly the best in the area. However, it has lost almost all of its former glory. The reviews here are unfortunately quite accurate - the rooms and appliances are old, smelly and many of the facilities are simply not well maintained. Location-wise you are very close to the Cataratas, as well as Iguazu City. The food is ok but caters more for Argentinien taste than international as it's very sweet. The Hotel facilities however are diligently cleaned every day. The one big plus point - and in my opinion the reason our stay was quite nice, despite the Hotel desperately needing an upgrade into the 21st Century - is it's employees. The people working there are more than friendly and accommodating. We would only return after a complete refurbish of the whole place.
