Not impressed, dirty bathroom
I have been looking forward to staying at this hotel for a long time. When you initially walk in it's pretty impressive. The English atmosphere, the furniture, and the Ambiance is incredible. However once we got to our room on the second floor I was quickly disappointed. The furniture is old and worn but the worst part is the bathroom was nasty. Somebody had spilled something all over the front of the vanity and the bathroom door and nobody had noticed to clean it up. It was something white so I don't even want to know what it was. I've convinced myself it was conditioner. There was a very thick layer of black dust/dirt on the door.. Also in the room there's a broken picture hanging on the wall or at least a place where a picture used to be. You would think for $150 a night they would be able to do better upkeep on the rooms. The staff is great but I wouldn't pay the price to stay again.
Long weekend stay in STL
My boyfriend and I stayed here for four nights. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. Overall the hotel was clean, and in a good location. The breakfast is grab and go but had a good variety of scones, muffins, cereals and fruit. Plus of course coffee and tea (available 24/7). We booked a junior suite with king bed and it was pretty spacious, good size for what we needed. The only negative thing was not having the expedia gold VIP+ access perk. Otherwise I would stay here again and would also recommend to others
Not a good night's rest
There is a lot of charm to the Cheshire, but it is not the kind of hotel where you can get a great night's sleep. We had a themed suite, and the mattress was uncomfortably soft. The pillows were unsubstantial, on par with low cost pillows you find at most hotels. The fan in the room sounded like a jet engine, and so to keep from getting woken up repeatedly, we turned it off (the setting to keep the fan on all night didn't work). That was when we began to notice just how thin the walls are. Every time a person spoke, a faucet turned on, or a toilet flushed, you could hear it through the walls. We paid for a romance package, which came with a late 1pm check out, but at 11am one of the neighbors started blasting music, and so we left early. We did enjoy our time at the tavern. The food was good, and bartender Chris was helpful.
Just a dusty room and cold floor for $165
I've loved the Cheshire, since I was a kid. Decided to spend a couple's night away in what I remembered as a magical place. But the reality was much less romantic. The room was stuffy and quite filthy. The dust on the tables, the floors, and every surface was just terrible. It was so hot in the sleeping area, we had to open the windows. The bed was a disaster...we rolled to the center constantly. While the staff was absolutely delightful and the common areas were breathtaking...we left having left a little of my childish joy behind. I wanted to take my own kids to feel the wonder...I just don't know if it's still there. ~ disenchanted
So much promise ...
We tried to give the Cheshire the benefit of the doubt. We had a very affordable rate on a Saturday evening. Check in was fine and we were told they had two restaurants for guests at our arrival. We went down to the restaurant in the hotel at 4pm to get an appetizer before dinner. They had menus on the tables. As we ordered we were told the kitchen did not open until 5pm. This was disappointing as there was no signs stating it was not in full operation. Our room was clean but we only had two bath towels and two hand towels in the bathroom- no wash clothes or bath mat (the floor was cold tile). We did ask for extra towels when we arrived in for the evening and were told that they didn’t have any. The front desk attendant said we could call back after 11:30pm to see if some were available. Around 11:30pm the fire alarm went off and continued to go off for the next hour. We contacted the front desk and they said there was no fire and as soon as the fire department arrived the alarm would go off. It took about 45 minutes for this to happen. Our room was extra warm and we turned the air down and it never changed all evening. It was still very warm the next morning. The mattress on the bed needs to be replaced. It was a king bed and was much lower in the middle. The pillows on the bed were not full size they had four couch sized pillows- square pillows instead . There were no other pillows or even a blanket in the room. I was glad we did not run out of toilet paper. We arrived to less than half a roll and left with it almost gone. There was no extra paper available. The room was noisy if anyone walked outside the door. Luckily the hotel was not fully occupied. The entire hotel was well decorated but the floors were very dirty. A little cleaning and shine would make a huge difference. Our room had one lamp that was not functioning and one of the wall decorations was blank and seemed to have been torn off the wall. (Picture attached) We went to the breakfast offered in the morning and were glad they had coffee, cold cereal, packaged breads, fruit and juice available. It was appreciated that they still offered this during the pandemic. The hotel has lots of charm and could be so beautiful if a little more cleaning in the public spaces would happen. We did appreciate the free parking that was available.
