Hotel Imperial was a perfect choice! Staff was super helpful and friendly (especially a receptionist named Vanessa), our room was very clean and breakfast was delicious. Pool side was also nice and quiet. Excellent location! Will definitely visit again and thank you!
Great old hotel in a great area
If you come to Rio for more than just the famous beaches (and you should!) why not stay in Catete? It's a lively, safe, not-very-touristy area not far from the city centre and on the metro, so it's easy to get to all the highlights of this "cidade maravilhosa". Almost opposite Catete Palace with it's lovely, peaceful park, and a short walk to Flamengo beach, the Imperial Hotel is a great place to stay. It's not 5* luxury, but it's very clean, comfortable, well-located and very reasonably priced. Some 100 years ago it was probably the best hotel in Rio, and it's faded grandeur still appeals. The staff are great; not all of them speak English (and why should they?) but they'll always greet you with a friendly "bom dia" and will go out of their way to help you. Excellent breakfasts and good meals in the quiet, ever-open restaurant. There's a nice, quiet swimming pool and terrace at the back, and a small gym and sauna. We've stayed there several times and unless you insist on Capacabana/Ipanema/Leblon/Barra and/or luxury facilities and service - and are willing to pay for it - I strongly recommend the Imperial.
Depends on the room otherwise solid 3 star
Make sure you ask for a room that is not on the front street, when we first checked in the room looked ok but there was a musty smell, we found lots of ants in the room and the windows were old shutters and very noisy. It was so bad I wanted to leave!! But when we got relocated after raising the concerns it was like being in an entirely different hotel. The staff were amazingly helpful and very concerned about our original problem. Security is very good as well. The areas is great safe easy to travel on the underground and lots of local bars and restaurants to choose from. Breakfast was excellent as well. We would definitely recommend this hotel just make sure you have an updated room.
Fair
This place is OK for the price, Flemengo area is really quiet at night. Was disappointed that the "suite" I booked was older and nothing more than a room with a double and single bed. Other suites always have a sitting area or office space. The place is very secure with staff checking key cards at the entry. Took awhile to check in because they make you fill out a form (even though they take a copy of your passport so they already have your important info). Safe box in room is a plus. Staff is helpful.
Good Hotel overall
The hotel room was adequate for a short stay. The room and bathroom are pretty small in size and amenities like hairdryer etc. are not there. However, it was clean and we had no complaints. The hotel is located extremely close to the Catete metro, and the neighborhood is pretty safe too, the streets were busy and crowded at night too. Cabs are easily available. Breakfast was good.
