More about the hotel
Well placed and peaceful
We stayed here before in 2014 and for our 2019 visit to Rome decided to try somewhere new. After investigating what felt like every single other hotel and B&B in Trastevere we fell back on our old favourite and I'm glad we did. Sonnino Suite is in a grand old building set back from Piazza Sidney Sonnino, up on the 4th floor. We had Room 2 which looks out on to the back and the side street, with views over to the trees of the Aventino hill. Typically Italian with uncarpeted floors and good furniture, all very clean. It was quiet, peaceful, and the only vague noise was the local tram when it rattled past in the morning. The room was a good size with a large comfortable bed, a really snazzy bathroom (excellent shower), fridge, and air conditioning. Nearby is the river, and everything you could hope to see in Rome is a short walk away. There are supermarkets nearby if you want to picnic in the parks, the food options in Trastevere are exceptional, and the staff at the hotel could not have been more friendly and helpful with local recommendations. It's about a 20 minute walk from Trastevere station which links directly to the airport.
I stayed here because of the great reviews :-(
I chose Sonnino Suite because of the wonderful reviews as well as reasonable cost and distance to many points of interest in Rome. I think it’s quite odd that none of the reviews mention the cable type train that runs adjacent to the hotel. This train passes by every 2-3 minutes or so from 5:30AM-12:00AM. This train is so powerful and loud, that it literally shook the building each time it passed. Needless to say, there is little opportunity to sleep in this place. I was able to fall asleep after midnight until the first train came by at 5:30AM. Luckily I only booked here one night and couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there. Also couldn’t figure out how to turn the air conditioner on which was a problem because Rome is so hot and the hotel room door stuck so badly it would take a horrible amount of time to get in and out of the room. Also if you are not a thin or decent sized person, you will not fit in the shower, I got in it but could barely move in order to wash my hair. The shower door only opens so wide so if you are even moderately overweight, you won’t be able to shower here at all. Other than that, the room itself was decent and staff was nice but not super hospitable so to speak.
Good location
Sonnino was in great walking distance of everything we needed. Plenty of restaurants in Trastevere were less than 10 minute walk. 5 minute walk to the river which had lots of bars and places to sit and eat. Major attractions were about 30 minute walk, still doable to avoid taxi costs. The room was clean and had air condition. Breakfast is not included even though it is listed as B&B. Staff was friendly. Acceptable for the price. Good place to use primarily for sleeping and not necessarily spending time at the hotel.
Loved our stay
Perfect location, room was simple however very clean and comfortable. We had an amazing view from our window. Heater worked well however we struggled to get hot water from our shower, only luke warm but this wasn't to much of an issue. Would recommend room 10 if you are travelling with two people. I have been telling my friends about this hotel and I would stay again if I were to return to Rome.
Great Location & Cheap
We stayed here for a long weekend and it turned out to be the perfect place for us. The best thing was the location, right across the road from the fun heart of Trastevere with all the excellent restaurants and wine bars. It was also clean, the room was spacious, the bed and pillows very comfortable. It's on the 4th floor of a 5 storey apartment block and it was actually lovely opening the heavy door on the street as if we were coming home to our own apartment! And of course it's very reasonably priced so no complaints there, and the staff were very friendly. The rooms look very nice in the photos but be aware some of the furnishings are actually a bit cheap and odd, but at this price it would be churlish to complain! It's certainly very clean. The only downsides were that we arrived late at 10pm and it took us a while to get in touch with them to let us in, so make sure you arrange that in detail beforehand. Also our room #4 was quite noisy from the trams, which didn't bother us but might do others so if you need quiet then ask for room overlooking the main road. And although it says it's a B&B there's actually no breakfast, and there's only a horrible coffee vending machine that didn't actually dispense coffee - only horrible sweet tea. Fortunately there's lots of cafes around for coffee and croissant!
