Several Issues at this hotel

Reviewed 6 december, 2022

I was planning a trip to SLC late September to see two friends who I had not seen in years. One lives in PC. The other one is a local news anchor and lives close to downtown. I was advised to stay in downtown SLC. Being a Hyatt loyalist, I looked for a Hyatt property first. I wanted to book at Hyatt Regency, but it wasn’t available. I found out later that it wasn’t open yet. My only options were between Hyatt Place and House. I decided to book at Hyatt Place. The location of the hotel is on the outskirt of downtown. Depending on the individual, some may think it is too far from downtown. It was fine for me. I like the location. I took the airport train to downtown, and it was a short walk to the hotel. If you are in town to watch the Jazz play, the stadium is maybe 5-minute walking distance from the hotel. The Gateway shopping mall is close by as well. During check in, I was told there would not be housekeeping service during the stay because of Covid. It doesn’t bother me personally as I usually don’t have my room serviced unless it is a long stay. But when they flat out tell you that after everything is getting back to normal, it just doesn’t make sense. That sets the tone for the rest of my trip. Not sure what the Covid reason really means because there are good 15-20 people in a small confined area having breakfast when it is really busy. I was staying for 3 nights. The day before I checked out, I stopped by the front desk asking for late checkout. It is one of the best benefits for being a Globalist in the World of Hyatt program. The guy told me “You are all set.” I asked if he could re-key my room card so I don’t get locked out the next day. He looked puzzled and repeated himself, “You are all set.” I told him I was asking him to re-program the card. He still looked puzzled and gave me a weird look. He called someone over. She looked puzzled and seemed bothered by the request. This is bizarre to me as I am not asking for anything unusual. I was just told the week before at a different Hyatt to always ask to have my keys re-programmed when I request a late check out so I don’t get locked out. I have been told of this many times and have done this many times since I spend over 100 nights at hotels each of the past three years. Anyways, both them seemed annoyed, which in turn made the lady waiting behind me believe I was giving them trouble. As I walked away, the lady made a comment to them and they all burst out laughing. I found this highly unprofessional especially since I did absolutely nothing wrong. Even if I did, they should try much harder to avoid mocking their guest while I was still in the vicinity. I booked the stay on points. I was not expecting any charges. When I checked out, the gentleman looked up my bill and said, “You are all set." By him saying that I didn't think I had any charges and so I agreed to just have the receipt emailed to me. When I looked at my email receipt the next day, there was a $7 charge. I called the hotel right away. They could not tell me what the charge was. I asked the lady to remove the charge because it was hotel’s mistake. She said she doesn’t have the power to do that. The only person who has the power to do that is the manager and I needed to call back during the time he is at the property. This is simply absurd for a $7 charge. I have never heard of that in my stays with Hyatt properties. Since I was leaving or Europe the next day, I asked for his email address instead. I emailed the manager and cc’d my assigned Hyatt Concierge (Hyatt concierge is another benefit of being a Globalist, someone who is there to help you with whatever you need). I asked the manager to remove the $7 charge and told him about the incident I described above when I requested late checkout. My Concierge responded to my email first after several days because the manager never responded. He told me he would call the hotel to find another way to contact the manager. The manager did eventually respond to the email. He said he will refund my $7 and he will add some points to my Hyatt account. He never really addressed the incident and I never asked for anything. I guess offering me points is his way of making the problem go away. I waited 3 more weeks and never saw any points added to my account. I sent the manager a short email to follow up on the points he said he was adding to my account. It’s now 5 weeks since I emailed him. No response.

Beautiful place in a great location

This hotel is super easy to find and is in a good location. The place was beautiful and the bed was very comfortable. Freshly cleaned carpets. The breakfast definitely wasn’t great but there was food.

Good Hotel

Hotel is close to the Vivint Arena and the Gateway. We walked to dinner to Flemings at the Gateway. Just a block away, had a great dinner, drinks and walked back to hotel. If I wanted to stay in SLC area again, I’d consider this hotel. Everything was new and clean and hotel seemed well run.

Met expectations on short notice stay

Reviewed 23 october, 2022

Did not have sofa throw pillows & missing paint chips on the exec desk, large king was comfy. Rough toilet paper but overall nice, but met my room placement request and put me as far away from the elevator as possible. Rooms were not huge but did have the large king beds as an option which I prefer over two Queen beds. Good short notice hotel stay with great hot breakfast in the morning, and Starbucks coffee on for the day. A small bar by the front desk and plenty of tables and lounge areas in the lobby for those times you are waiting on others to join. Parking is in the back, accessed with your card and is a daily charge but the incidentals charges are minimal. It’s not top luxury but I have stayed in many of the hotels in SLC and this one didn’t disappoint as much as some of their larger competitors have. It’s easy to find and honestly, a little peaceful gem in the middle of the city if you don’t have a need for a kitchen in the room.

HH in October

Clean, maintained and efficient staff. Great location near light rail, malls and temple sq. Bed mattress need updating otherwise rooms were sufficient. Parking is overpriced and should be complimentary based on amount of open parking in downtown area.
