La Carreta Restaurant Extraordinaire!

Reviewed 11 november, 2022

The La Carreta team of Rogelio, Felipe, Carlos, Lupe, Joselyn, and Armando were excellent in food & bar prep, service and the food and dessert presentation was exceptional. They are a kind, courteous, and team that pays attention to details! I speak for all our family who were here and tip our hat for a job well done! Please convey our sincere Thanks!

It was my first time staying at Occidental Cozumel and the staff was very welcoming and helpful. I stayed at the Royal Club and it is worth every penny. The staff : Cecilia , Mayra , Rogelio , Lupita, Carlos and Tomas are the best! I will come back again . Gracias Brian

Underwhelming and certainly not up to the usual Royal standard

Reviewed 18 october, 2022

We booked via MyBarcelo as we always do selecting the Royal Level Master Suite having stayed in the same level room at the Occidental Xcaret previously. By chance we looked on trip adviser in the week before we travelled and found countless reviews detailing a norovirus outbreak to the hotel we had booked, we called both Barcelo and the hotel to request moving to another Barcelo hotel (we were on also staying at the Barcelo Tucancun for the second half of our trip), both refused to discuss whether there was any truth in the reports and both insisted we had to talk / email the bookings manager at the hotel, we tried to contact repeatedly to no avail all but for one email offering a move of dates but with no more detail - we decided to risk travelling. It was on our third day in resort the bookings manager sent a less than polite email stating there had been no reports of Norovirus despite nearly every other staff member telling us the opposite. Check-in, always a painful process in Mexico and more so when we were allocated a very nice suite however not the master suite we had booked, on querying this the staff member openly lied repeatedly telling us that we were in the master suite and charging accordingly . As it was very late and having travelled for 20 hours from door to door we decided to deal with it the following morning. It then took a further 30 minutes for the staff member to decide the card machine she had in the Royal reception would not accept Amex and we then had to move back to the main reception where we then had to wait a further 15 minutes for the staff member to charge the card terminal that would accept our card. The following morning and after a staff change reception then admitted they had double booked the Master Suite only after spending nearly an hour did they say that they would process a refund for the difference in room rates. The stay at the hotel was OK, it certainly was not up to the incredible standard we have previously experienced in Royal Level accommodation, service in the royal level restaurant was disjointed with long waits for drinks and often being left part way through an order to attend to American guests waving tips for attention. The Food at the Royal was excellent however elsewhere in the hotel it was average at best with the main restaurant uncomfortably hot with no air conditioning, the Mexican restaurant offering under seasoned, bland dishes and the lunch time buffets being repetitive. The pool and the beach were lovely as expected and kept brilliantly clean, the pool bar and adults pool bar offered great drinks with swift service both from the bars and the waiting staff with a good range of cocktails. Unfortunately when these closed the main bar was a letdown in comparison. We didn’t see any evening entertainment which was fine with us as we were on Cozumel for the fabulous diving so there were no late nights anyway. Throughout the hotel as in many Mexican resorts Coatis roamed freely, while lovely to look at there were droppings everywhere very often left until the following morning before being cleaned up. It took a 5 further visits to the Royal reception before they processed a refund for the difference in room rates (over £600), the hotel did recognise there had been an error in the booking and offered us a voucher for a complementary stay, while a nice gesture when we looked at the terms of booking and the paper thin booking windows we would not be able to use it or to arrange flights within the booking windows leaving it unusable. We did enjoy our stay but it was a world away from the Occidental Xcaret and every other Barcelo hotel we have stayed at and unlike any other I would not rush to return.

Not worth it.

Don't waste your money upgrading to royal or going to the occidental unless you have to; the rooms are old and moldy, and even though the maids are doing the best they can, there are some things they just can't fix because it has to do with the overall maintenance of the whole resort. Every day there seems to be a new issue, and getting back into your room and worrying about what new problems you'll see becomes tiring. I almost feel bad writing this because the staff try their best to accommodate you and are kind. Still, there's nothing they can do if the higher-ups don't bother fixing the essential things in the rooms—just an overall disappointing experience from the Occidental and Barcelo.

Occidental Cozumel not exactly as pristine as pictured online

We stayed at the Occidental Cozumel for the first time from mid August to the end of August 2022. We were excited to return to the island where we honeymooned 30 years ago. Pros: La Carreta was a wonderful place to eat and we cannot say enough positive things about the staff. Felipe, Carlos S., Rogelio, Carlos U., Carlos M., Jorge, and Fabiola, do everything possible to make you feel special and welcomed. Jocelyn, Jimmy, Marcos and Sandra prepare such wonderful food that you are never disappointed. Both the Mediterranean and Mexican restaurants are wonderful as well (the staff are exceptional) and along with delicious food have great service although the menus don t' change and when you are there for a bit it would be nice to see something different. The bartenders are kind and the waitstaff at the bars and around the pools are very attentive. The grounds of the hotel seem to be well maintained and the landscaping very lush. Cons: We communicated via email with the hotel prior to arrival in an effort to upgrade to the Royal level. After many emails we were informed that we will have 2 rooms in the Royal level. When we arrived we were told that only one of the rooms we were promised was available and that my husband and I would have to spend the first 3 nights out of the Royal level and out of the Royal pool and restaurants. I held my ground and fortunately brought copies of the email exchange. That said, we got a room on the Royal level. Now the adventure began in room 2127. On the surface the room looked great but then you start to notice the lack of maintenance. The maids did a wonderful job everyday of cleaning but tiles were falling off the wall in the shower and the rain head shower was down to a trickle which was never fixed the entire time we were there no matter what we said. After 3 days there we noticed that all of our clothes and the sheets on the bed were damp. Although it is built into the wall and appears to be AC, we suspected it was a swamp cooler and everything we had was damp and started to smell like mildew. True air-conditioning would have dried it out but this was not AC. Tiles were missing from the wall of the Royal pool as well. You have to make a reservation for dinners in the restaurants (which is expected) but the computer system seems to be so archaic that it takes forever for the Royal receptionists to find a slot. When you get there most of the tables are empty so I don't know what the problems are. One other thing they don't tell you is that on Sundays it appears that local families use the resort and the pool by the water is packed. No chairs or shade to be found. Probably the most disappointing thing of all was the beach. In the photos online it is beautiful. In reality, half of it is missing apparently from a hurricane that came through in 2021. There is almost no shade and while the water is still beautiful you cannot be out there for very long or you will die of the heat. On the surface this hotel appears to be beautiful but it is in need of upgrades and no amount of kindness or hard work by the staff makes up for what the Barcelo Group does not address in maintenance.
