Poor experience on many, many, many levels!

Truly a miserable experience with no one single cause – except very lackluster management! I stayed the Holiday Inn Savannah Historic District for three nights in November 2022 while attending a conference at the Savannah Convention Center. Upon check-in, I met the overly aggressive-trying-to-be-friendly-and-relatable front desk manager, “Dustin”, who tried to crack jokes about the conference I was attending while checking me in. He also made numerous jokes about me trying to use the WiFi password and said he’d mock me if I didn’t do it correctly after he briefed me. I went to my first room only to find a large floor drying fan set on high trying to dry out the squishy floor which apparently had flooded. I took myself and my luggage cart back downstairs and said I needed a new room. Dustin grumbled, but sent me to another room on the second floor. Upon trying to make entry, I found the electronic key would not work and I couldn’t get in. Dustin made a new key for new Room #3 now (mind you, it’s now 9 PM) and then grumbled again after he electronically recoded the key to Room 2. He then followed me upstairs to get into the third room, while showing me how to open the door to Room 2 (after he’d recoded the electronic key, intimating that I was an idiot for not being able to do it myself). I spent the first night in Room #3, only to find the a/c not working and not cooling below a steamy 74 degrees. On my second day, I went back downstairs and encountered Dustin again and asked if someone could look at my a/c, or I be given another room. He grumbled again but quickly had someone come to my room, declare it not working, and then told me to go back down to the desk to get another room (#4 now!). I went back downstairs, stood in line for almost 30 minutes (only one front desk host it seemed and no one else to assist with a long line) and Dustin gave me another room (#4!) – all on the second floor. Apparently, there were no other rooms in a 7-story building. Room 4’s a/c was also malfunctioning, and I packed up my stuff yet again and traipsed downstairs. Another front desk host had come on duty and she was less helpful than Dustin! She muttered that there we no rooms (it was around 5 pm), but they were cleaning more and should have something available in 30 minutes or so. I had to get back to my convention and I had to leave, but tried again when I returned around 830 pm). She did not have any new rooms, unlike her promises earlier, but I said I’d gladly accept a two-queen room, just as long as the a/c worked, the floor was dry, and I could get some sleep. She finally found me Room #5(!) on the second floor again. That room was adequate and I stayed because it was more hassle to leave than stay. But soon thereafter the phone rang and the front desk clerk angrily chided me for not bringing down the old key to the old room, or to confirm that I was ok with the most recently assigned room. She forced me to dress again (it’s near 10PM at this point) to bring the electronic key back to her in the lobby! Along the way, I found that the hotel staff doesn’t routinely check whether there is any shampoo in the room (I got two lotions and a conditioner), whether the hangars in the closet were broken, whether the lampshades had finials on them to hold them on, whether the chair was broken, whether the gyn was permanently “under renovation” and closed, whether the telephone worked – I had to call to get my car out of the garage via the valet and the phone didn’t work -- and a thousand other little things that could’ve been corrected if someone had bothered to look. Same price as other surrounding hotels, $37 a night to park, an $11 breakfast buffet, it’s just not worth it. Semi-Bright spot, when I checked out (they still make you go to the front desk to check out – all via paper, no emails, no electronic anything) on the fourth morning, my front desk host was actually very pleasant and seemed to genuinely care that my stay was awful. She said she’d give me some IHG points which haven’t shown up on my account yet and she said she’d have the Assistant General Manager call me (no one has yet, btw). But she was pleasant at least. I did have to go back after I’d read the folio and found that I’d been charged another $37 to park a fourth night. Just not a good experience.

The Cons Outweigh The Pros

My partner and I stayed over the Halloween weekend (2022). The Pros: right across the road from the City Market and close to the River District. Also, Francis at the Front Desk was very helpful. She should be acknowledged. The Cons: (1) only 1 luggage trolley and it was no where to be found;the other 2 trollies were broken for quite some time we were told, (2) bathroom was not cleaned daily and we had to ask each day for towels. What we were given were 2 floor mats instead of bath towels, (3) curtains did not close all the way, (4) TV was broken and manager was aware and that's the way it stayed, (5) fire alarm went off as event in conference room was using a smoke/fog machine and we all had to evacuate. No one was checking on the event, (6) hallways not vacuumed during our stay, (7) main doors needed to be painted as they had wear and tear, (8) valet area smelled of urine and needed to be power washed, (9) snack area ran out of bottled water, (10) cigarette butts outside hotel from smoking guests not swept up, (11) leaving amenities in bathroom of small deodorants or shampoo bottles that are less than half filled or partially used is a definite NO-NO! None of these items were sealed in any way, and (12) hot breakfast was just ok and you pay for it. No where does it say, that we were able to find, it was not included. (13) ice machine on 2nd floor didn't work for quite some time and we were told the 4th floor one worked. This could be a really nice hotel as it had a decent location, but upper management needs to pay attention to reviews they are receiving. Also, it would be nice if residents are offered a booklet of historic sites and events occurring and are told they can book events through their front desk. You pay for what you get and obviously we did.

Do not go here. Holiday Inn has obviously given up running hotels. Arrived to valet standing talking. Ask for a bellman. There was none. Asked for a luggage cart. “We have one and it’s in use”. I found the cart on the 2nd floor. My room had no toilet tissue, one towel, tub and sink clogged. Soap the size of a quarter. Filthy hallways. The employees were rude due to an obvious lack of training. The breakfast buffet was a fright. The neighborhood was scary. I could go on….but I won’t. This is my third Holiday Inn….all were bad but this, this one should be condemned.

I would not recommend if you value cleanliness! The hotel was dirty, room was not clean, hallways not clean or vacuumed. The drawers in room were not cleaned out from previous guest. Plus no luggage rack provided for suitcase. Old and basic repairs needed. Garbage outside of hotel for days! Just not an enjoyable or pleasant experience.


Good location but…

This location is very good, however, the rooms definitely need an upgrade, they were short staff to the point that only the bathroom was cleaned one day out of three days we stayed and beds were never made. The valet parking service was very slow at times, we understand they we’re trying their best, but short staff always results in poor service. Will go back probably knowing the location.
