Loved it and can’t wait to go back!

My husband and myself stayed for 3 nights. I can honestly say that this was one of the best places I have ever stayed! We had a lovely room (Room 1). Beautiful room facing the sea. Fantastic big windows that open wide that let the sea breeze right into the room. Lovely and clean. I miss sitting on the windowsill listening to the sound of the sea. To me, it was idyllic! We relaxed, we read, we walked, we talked (especially in the gorgeous beer garden!). Mostly we enjoyed the peace and quiet after a very stressful year where we both worked full time through the pandemic. The staff could not have done more than they did to make us feel welcome. Special mentions to Peter who had only been there for 2 weeks. Very professional, helpful, polite, smiling.....what more can you ask? Aiden (sorry if I’ve spelt your name wrong!). What a lovely lad.....lovely smile and a great sense of humour. Karen was warm, welcoming and very smiley. I didn’t get everyones names but none of the staff disappointed us. Two of the owners were present at the time and it was evident that they are passionate about this place. The food was fantastic ate every meal. Also, compliments to the trainee chefs. They did a fantastic job. I hope we’ll be able to stay again really soon. Thank you for a memorable stay!!
Welcoming friendly place

Stayed here for one night whilst on our cycling trip. On arrival friendly and helpful staff checked us in. Put our bikes in secure storage.
Had a drink in the great garden with sea view. Dinner was awesome, had fish and chips and falafel burger. Portion size is nice. We had a great night sleep and the WiFi is strong up on the 3rd floor. We had everything we needed in our room.
Morning breakfast in the garden, can’t beat it. Coffee machine serves amazing coffee and hot chocolate.
Thank you to the staff. We’ll definitely stay here again.
Excellent location but room for improvement in some areas

Firstly the positives, the hotel is in a fantastic location and the view from the sea view bedrooms plus the bar beer garden is superb. Check-in was easy and the level of cleanliness in the room was good, which is the main thing. The decor and feel was also excellent. All staff are very friendly.
There are two areas which could make this a 5/5. Firstly and as many other reviews have stated, the table service in the bar and at breakfast requires improvement. The servers are either overworked or forgetful and we were not the only ones who had to remind them 2/3 times of things we had previously asked for. They are only young but a good mentor and some additional assistance would transform their performance in my view. Incidentally, the lady behind the bar on the Sat evening was excellent.
Second area for improvement is the lack of bins and general tidyness outside reception and the garden area. There is a lack of bins, so dog poo bags were left on the floor next to the existing very small bin. Also, people ended up using an old black dustbin outside reception which looked like it was being used for builders materials. It doesnt give a good first impression as you arrive and makes the place look scruffy and unkempt. Just a little attention to detail with a good clean up and regular ones to follow plus an extra bin regularly emptied would make a world of difference.
Ending on a positive, the charm of the building and the location are both second to none. Coupled with the good rooms and nice decor, this could be a little gem on the coast if the service and outside area issues were addressed. Oh one other thing, it is right on the Cumbrian Coast train line so if you like trains, this place is definitely for you. We were even treated to a steam train on the Sat evening !!
Thanks for an enjoyable stay, we hope to return to this beautiful coast soon.
Save time and money. AVOID their restaurant and bar!

I booked a table for 20.00, arrived 30 minute early to have a drink before dining and made my presence known.
Ordering a gin and tonic seemEd to arouse confusion with the bartender who looked as if he wasn’t bothered about my custom or his job.
I took my drink to the beer garden. I was not impressed; tables were littered with dirty glasses and used ashtray it looked run down.
At the appointed time I went in to the dining room where I was told there was no table available, but ‘You can have that table in the bar’. I refused at which point a managerial was called upon who tried to entice me to said bar table. Again I refused and with that he and colleague ‘dismantled’ a set of three tables after which they pointed me to a solo table by the window. The gesture was cold and without expression.
I sat, and sat, and sat - for about 15 minutes without offers of a menu or a drink or even any kind of acknowledgement.
There seems to be only one other restaurant in Seascale which provides decent food and the level of service there is admirable.
I think Calder House is guilty of adopting a take it or leave policy, given that they have a prime site with limited competition which seems a shame considering the potential.

Went for an early evening meal with my wife and although the food was ok, the service and general organisation is pretty chaotic and a bit amateurish, to be honest. No background music in the dining area and everyone sitting whispering to each other. There’s atmosphere in Church at Sunday service. It could be a bit cleaner. They need a professional in there to sort it out.
