Stay here if: you are visiting the area, or just want a relaxing time in a country house hotel

A marvellous country house hotel. Not part of a chain and all the better for it. Friendly, helpful staff. Excellent location.
The Upper House isn’t perfect but that makes it all the better. It is a place where you can feel at home and relax. A place where the staff make you feel welcome. People have time for you.
The building is set at the end of a long drive and surrounded by grounds where you can explore. Inside, it retains many of its Victorian features and is charming

Upper half way house.

We wanted a half way hotel coming back from Arran. Upper house perfect fit. We were warned they had a wedding which included an outside hog roast. They expertly kept the wedding separate and apart from a few noises we had a perfect nights sleep before our onwards journey to Poole. We paid a bit more and stayed in an executive room. This was a front corner room with lovely views. The team were very friendly, helpful and efficient.
We did not do lunch or dinner, however breakfast was best for a long time. Table service and we had proper omelettes with massive mushrooms and fresh ham. Very tasty. Again we had a separate room for breakfast with top service. Thanks for a great stay but too short.
70th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CANCELLED BY HOTEL DUE TO CHIEF SHORTAGES.
Reviewed 10 September, 2021
Think twice before booking a table in the restaurant for a special event. Booked a table for 8 people for Sunday lunch 26th September to celebrate a 70th wedding anniversary. Just received a call cancelling the booking because of chief shortages. What makes this cancellation even more annoying is the fact they did exactly the same thing last year. We had booked for afternoon tea on 26th September 2020 only to be cancelled because the hotel had taken a last minute wedding booking, which was obviously more financially lucrative than the people who like us would have been cancelled for afternoon teas! Took a further three cancelled afternoon tea reservations before we managed to get a successful afternoon tea booked. If I'm honest the afternoon tea was lovely, but the worry that your event would go ahead was concerning. However COVID was sited as the reason, so difficult to complain. But to be cancelled yet again and for such an important special occasion is just unacceptable. When placing the booking I advised what at happened the previous year for my parents anniversary and explained this year was more important given it was a 70th anniversary and was assured the same thing wouldn't happen again! Obviously the assurance was misjudged by The Upper House. I've just read other reviews and established the hotel did exactly the same thing to another booking in August, but worse still cancelled them only a couple of hours before their reservation time for a 40th wedding anniversary, also stating they had chief shortages. Why keep taking bookings until they've sorted the staffing problems out, only to then spoil special events that people have booked? There can't be many people who get to celebrate a 70th wedding anniversary and to have this hotel spoil the planned event is just not acceptable and to offer Afternoon Tea as an alternative is also not acceptable. We've attended family weddings, luncheons, evening meals, Sunday lunches, Mother's day, fathers day meals and or afternoon teas, many afternoon teas, coffee & cake treats etc over the years and have really enjoyed each visit, but to be let down not only once but twice for a special event makes me think our loyalty to this venue has now come to an end. Think long and hard when making a booking if the hotel cancelling your booking would it cause real disappointment. Unfortunately due to number of people in the booking and Sunday lunch always been such a popular choice, our chances of finding a suitable alternative location are now very slim. So thank you The Upper House for ruining my parents 70th wedding anniversary.
Overnight stay for an event

My second stay here, this time during an event held at the hotel. Superb location and Hotel. Clean and well presented and the standard of the service for the event organised by the hotel was exceptional. The rooms are a good standard and the food is good served by attentive staff.
