Hotel agradable, lugar hermoso

My husband and I were looking for a short get away. Stayed 2 nights. When we arrived, the heat in our room was set at 50 and it took several hours to get it up to 60. Forget trying to sleep. The walls are paper thin and the housekeeping staff clearly want you out early in the morning. The housekeeper on the 1st floor begins at 7:30 AM and yells to other staff down the hallway, carries on loud conversations and vacuums. This was despite complaining to the front desk. We will not be coming back.
Well located for skiing Stratton Mountain

We stayed for two nights at the Black Bear Lodge in early March for a short ski vacation.
Overall, we were very pleased with our stay. The staff, from the front desk to the restaurant team, were really caring and courteous.
The room was quite spacious and featured two very comfortable queen beds. The bathroom was clean and had a nice large mirror but lacked an extractor fan.
The room heating system was very noisy, in fact, we had to switch it off as it kept waking us up every time it turned on. The Wi-Fi connection was also really poor but this could be because our room was on the third floor.
Breakfast is included in the room booking and it was really nice. Full buffet, with a wide selection of hot and cold options, pastries, fruits etc.
The hotel is located very close to Stratton Mountain and their shuttle, which runs continuously from 7 am to 10 pm, was very convenient.
I do recommend this hotel if you’re looking for something close to Stratton Mountain.

Stayed here on President's day weekend for skiing. Picked this because of location and it was the least expensive option that was still on mountain.
Room (2/5) - Basic hotel room (two queens with bathroom). It was basically clean, with the only complaint being a bit of mold in the shower. Decor is very dated and the room was short on amenities. There was no towel rack (just a hook on the door which is hard for 4 people), no coffee maker, no mini-fridge, etc. We were on the 2nd floor so had no noise or other issues, but I would imagine that all those ski boots might be annoying on the first floor.
General building (3/5): Average hotel. Some nice touches here and there, but could use a little maintenance in areas (the carpet in the hall was worn to the point of fraying in spots). Hot tub appeared clean and plenty of towels available. The sauna was OK, but really never got hot. Didn't look for a fitness area (skiing was all the exercise we needed), but I think you can pay a fee to use one in a different building (not positive about this). Housekeeping was very prompt and friendly. The front desk was very helpful and pleasant. The shuttle service to the mountain was prompt (never waited more then 5 minutes or so), the drivers friendly and helpful, and the drop-off location very convenient.
Restaurant (Table 43.1) - Dinner (0/5): Horrible experience. We stayed a the hotel on a ski trip. I was told the night I arrived that we couldn't make reservations for the next night and to just show up early to put our name on the list. Got there about 6 pm to get on the list. We knew it would be packed (holiday weekend) so we expected a wait. The hostess was totally frazzled. She couldn't give us a wait time (even with at least 5 open tables in sight) and said the kitchen couldn't keep up. She told us we could wait, but we may never get a seating (she would call us if something opened up). She was also quite rude during the process. We were annoyed but ate off mountain and wrote it off to a busy night. Showed up the next night at 4:30 to get on list. The same snotty hostess was there and she gave us the same story as the previous night (kitchen slow, all booked up, etc.). How can you be booked when it's only 4:30 and no reservations?? She then proceeded to tell us you can make reservations and berated us for not making them MONTHS in advance! Are you kidding me? We told her we tried to make reservations but were told we couldn't! We looked in the restaurant and more then half the tables were open. She said fine and she would squeeze us at 5:15. Ran back to the room, pulled people out of showers, etc. and returned at 5:25. She told us that we "missed our window" and couldn't be seated that night (not even on a list). Now it's completely our fault for not getting everyone back on time, but the place was still at least 50% empty! She made absolutely no effort to help us out and was actually downright ignorant about it. We've been skiing in the area for over 25 years and know that holiday weekends are typically a mess. Our expectations were pretty low, but there is no way we should have to deal with a rude, lousy attitude. Never even offered to let us wait at the bar, get appetizers, etc. I told her that they really needed to get their act together and give clear communications on how to get a reservation. She replied that "they had her act together". Really? Nice customer service. Is that why we had to drive 30 minutes back to Manchester to eat?
Restaurant (Table 43.1) - Breakfast (4/5): Good selection, especially for a "included with the room" breakfast buffet. The breakfast staff was excellent and kept the buffet stocked even though there were a huge number of people passing through. Downside was that there were no pancakes / waffles and the food offering was identical every morning, but the food that was offered was very tasty.
Summary: Bottom line is that you are paying to be close to the mountain and ski slopes. With that in mind, I'd stay here again for a ski trip (would definitely find somewhere else for dinner), but might explore other near-by options if off season.
