Lovely stay at The Grand Hotel Swanage
Reviewed 19 September, 2021
We had a very short stay here, just one night. The hotel was lovely. The greeting on arrival was warm and friendly. Our room on the top floor was bright, and spacious. Both the room and the bathroom appeared to have been fairly recently decorated, it was all very clean and there was no sign of it being 'tired'. Lovely white fluffy towels were provided for the bathroom, which had a lovely shower with a large fixed rainfall type shower head, and a conventional handheld option. We did not pay extra for a sea view, but enjoyed a lovely view over to Ballard and Nine Barrow Downs instead. Complementary tea, coffee, and chocolate drink were provided in the room, with 1 pack of 2 shortbread biscuits. 2 packs would be nice, that coming from someone who likes a biscuit or two with my tea. Reception were happy to give us extra milk when we asked for it.
Our stay was on a room only basis so did not include their 'award winning' breakfast, and we decided as we are not big breakfast eaters the £9.95 pp supplement for breakfast was not for us. I am more of a coffee and croissant person, so we headed into town for breakfast after checking out.
As we were only there one night, on a short walking break, we did not use the hotel leisure facilities, but we would if we stayed longer. We enjoyed an evening drink in the comfortable spacious bar, the staff here like all our other encounters with staff, were friendly and efficient, and the bar prices were reasonable.
Parking is very limited - it is much easier to drop your things off at the hotel then head 1 min drive (3 or 4 min walk) to the North Beach car park, where there is plenty of space and only costs £6 for 24 hrs.
The hotel is a beautiful old building, with a lovely garden, a great conservatory area with wonderful sea views, and there is direct access to the beach via some steep steps down through the garden.
We would definitely stay there again.
Photos are of our room, the view from our room, early morning view from the conservatory, and Swanage beach below the hotel.
Stunning views from this lovely hotel.

We have visited The Grand Hotel many times mainly because we love the views. It's great to see the improves they have been making over the years, the entrance and bar area look fantastic.
It's worth visiting The Cabin at the bottom of the steps leading from the garden. There are lots of things to do in the area, there are lovely coast walks, a train to ride on or you can go a bit further to Corfe Castle, to name a few.

Ordered beef bourginon and it surpassed my expectations. This was the best bourginon I have ever had, well done Andrea who I believe was the chef. As well, the hotel is charming. It has its own private access to the beach for a lovely swim.
The best in Dorset

A huge thank you to Lindsay and the brilliant staff at the Grand for another wonderful 3 day break.
Nothing too much trouble, lovely room and excellent food and a view to die for.
Can’t wait to go back in 2022

It's very hard to review a hotel at the moment.
With all the problems that covid has brought to the industry, it can't be easy for any hotel to function.
So I'll start with the good bits.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, never saw anyone without a smile on their faces.
The Views are amazing, we had a sea view room (£210 a night) which had been newly decorated, it was very clean with a nice bathroom. The room was a little smaller than expected for the price but it was large enough.
No house keeping because of covid, we knew that so it wasn't a problem. Just ask at reception if you need extra tea/coffee/milk.
We loved getting up early and walking down the stairs to the beach for a swim, you really can't fault the location. Very handy beach bar/cafe at the bottom of the stairs which i will review separately.
Now for the things we found not so good.
The bed was possibly the worst we have ever had in a hotel, uncomfortable with noisy springs.
The whole of Swanage is having staffing problems. The hotel is running on what would appear to be a skeleton staff, they are all pulling together and doing their best.....but for the money its not quite good enough.
We arrived around 2pm and were lucky to get a parking spot, as stated in other reviews the car park is tiny.
We were told we might be able to check in around 4pm but definitely before 5pm.
We thought we could just get a snack and drink at the bar. But because of lack of staff the bar was shut, this happened very day of our stay between 2-6, so if you would like a G&T on the beautiful lawn looking over the bay, your out of luck. Go down the stairs to the beach bar.
We ate in the restaurant the first night, the menu is very good. But our food was just ok so we didn't eat there again.
Our first breakfast was poached eggs on toast again not great, the next morning we had the full english, the third morning we went to the beach bar for breakfast.
We enjoyed our break very much, we were lucky with the weather and swanage is beautiful.
Hopefully the Hotel will recover properly from covid, it has the potential to be an amazing place. Unfortunately in our opinion it is slightly overpriced for what they are currently offering.
Just one last thing, I think this is the only the second hotel we have visited where when we checked out we weren't asked if we had enjoyed our stay. Sometimes it really is the little things.
