Peace between green nature

Reviewed 12 may, 2015

It was a little difficult to get to La Querencia because google maps gets lost, but if you give the exact coordinates it will take you there, of course, if you go by car, anyway Xico has very nice people who are always willing to give directions to get there. La querencia is beatiful place sorrounded by green, fireflies and the sounds of the nature, is very peaceful place and comfy. They don´t have air conditioning only ceiling fan, so it gets a little difficult in the night, particularly if you are not used to hot and humid weather. On the other hand, talking about amenities, the restaurant opens at 9AM and they don´t serve everything on the menu, they closes at 8PM, so if you plan to go out be sure that you take dinner before getting to the hotel. They offer the very basic stuff you can get in any decent hotel, soap, hair shampoo, a coffeemaker and couple of bottle water. I would suggest to the manager that if they want to be consistent with their green policies they offer homemade or organic hair shampoo and soap.

A memorable experience

We took a cab out to La Querencia after being underwhelmed by the indifferent staff at Posada Los Naranjos. The Naranjos is located in the town itself, whereas the Querencia is in the countryside about a 10-minute cab ride toward the Texolo and Monjas waterfalls. Others have reviewed La Querencia's grounds and facilities, and I have little to add to what has already been said on that score. The treatment we received at the Querencia, however, was world-class. When we arrived, Rafael, the young manager of the property, advised they would be hosting a private party later that afternoon and that he would accordingly discount the room to 600 pesos. He also assured us that the staff would arrange to have a cab come for us should we want to go into town. Cabbies consistently charged between 25 and 35 pesos for the ride to or from Xico regardless of whether they came for us or we hailed them in the street. We spent the afternoon walking out to the waterfalls, which are very beautiful. (Be forewarned: Use insect repellant when you visit the waterfalls. The Veracruz mosquitos are very stealthy: you can hardly feel them nailing you, but the next day you will suffer itchy red bumps with small blood spots in the middle. These take a good four days to subside.) Over the course of the walk, it seemed that just about every other Veracruzano we met wanted to exchange life stories, which was quite a change from the more typical, city-cool attitude we found in Xalapa. When we returned to La Querencia, the party was in full swing. We retired to the upstairs balcony so as not to intrude. Within minutes, hotel staff came up with a table and offered us beer, claricót, tequila, coffee, or whatever we might want, on the house, as recompense for the inconvenience of the party downstairs. The apology did not stop there: we were treated to a non-stop course of food and drink--all complimentary--until we could eat or drink no more. Then, the gentleman whose anniversary was being feted invited us in the most gracious terms to join his party downstairs. I have traveled many places in Mexico and elsewhere, but I have never met more gracious and welcoming people anywhere in the world. Once you are out of the cities, the Veracruzanos are quite special. ¡Qué viva Veracruz!

Natural setting, natural beauty

Situated in the midst of shade grown coffee fincas, this was a wonderful retreat. Our room was on the second floor at the end over looking the cobbled road and the big shade trees. It was lovely to wake up and have views over the woods. The room was spacious. The long, shared gallery was a comfy place to sit and read. The staff was accommodating and friendly. As birders, we especially appreciated walking up and down the lanes early in the morning. Lots of interesting bird life. We also walked to the nearby waterfall. The in town experience was OK, especially the visit to the Museo del Vestido. Mostly, it was a busy place that had little appeal after the serenity of La Querencia. We do have recommendations for improvement for the business. With a room rate of $750 pesos/night, one would expect a few more amenities. We were given a single half liter of water for 2 people.... how about one each for every day? We had to ask for additional pillows because the 2 that were on the bed were so thin that they didn't support your head. The bathroom seemed to be under repair as the walls were not painted and the toilet seat was the wrong size and improperly installed. Our breakfasts were adequate but the one evening we asked for an order of quesadillas (3 small), we were charged $50 pesos. Seemed out of line. The wifi was only available right outside of the reception. We were grateful to have the connection but it seems like an extender on the gallery would benefit the guests a great deal. All this is not to say we would not return; we would. It is just that the value to the guests could be improved with some details attended to.
