Don't stay here!!!

If you don't mind having no A/C, no wifi except one small area of the hotel, ice cold showers and the same exact meals daily, then this is the place for you. Oh... and there's only one outlet in the room, no dresser or closet, the safe doesn't lock, you can hear literally everything your neighbors are saying through the paper thin walls and the bathroom is filled with bugs and lizards. Also no bottled water. I got Montezuma's Revenge here from the food or water. Most the staff, while friendly, barely speaks English so it's very frustrating to communicate. The waiters can't answer any questions about the food or manage simple requests. Worst of all were the tour guides. Even though they speak English, it's very difficult to understand them. There is one good one....Lourdes. I'm so disappointed in the entire experience at Tortuguero. Came here to see the turtles and even that was not what I expected. You are only allowed to watch one turtle nesting and it's slow and boring, especially since you can only make out about 1/3 of what the tour guide is saying. Chance of seeing an egg hatch is slim to none. We are here in Aug which is high season. It was cool to see for about 10 minutes and then we were ready to leave but had to stay for over an hour which felt like way longer. There were many turtles nesting on the beach but you've got to stay with your group and watch the one turtle. Tour guide said we were lucky because we saw a few turtles coming out of the water and going into the water....from very very far away in pitch black with no flashlights. Awful experience for kids plus you don't even know until last minute whether you are getting the 8-10pm or 10pm-12am tour until 6pm (after you've paid - it's a lottery system). We got the late one and were all exhausted and bored. Also, no pics allowed. Seriously, skip Tortuguero. You can see the same animals elsewhere in CR and not feel like you're camping.
Great place to stay in Tortuguero

We had a nice stay at the hotel, and the experiences doing tours arranged by the hotel and also the meals at the hotel was great. Courteous staff, and we had nice guides for the tours we had there.
The lodge arranged transportation from San Jose to Tortuguero and back to a pit stop Rio Danta. Smooth arrangement.
On the tours provided by the lodge: Great tour, knowledgeable and personable guide (Mr. Piero). We also participated in a night tour with the same guide, and was going to do a morning canal tour as well that unfortunately was cancelled due to thunderstorms.
We already booked a turtle watching tour with another tour provider, so we did not go with group from the lodge. But we ended up watching a turtle laying eggs at the beach just right outside Mawamba Lodge.
Overall great experience staying there and would recommend it to others planning on visiting Tortuguero
Best Option Outside of Town

We were very happy with our 2 night stay at Mawamba. We wanted to stay outside of town but have access by foot, and this lodge fit the bill. There's a lovely walking path (mostly shaded) that runs from the lodge into town, only a 20 minute walk. You can easily take a water taxi but half the time we chose to walk. We also liked being between the ocean and the river, and being able to easily explore both. The rooms are nicely spread out though paper thin walls meant noisy neighbors are a bummer. Rooms were very small but clean and comfortable. The office staff were very helpful and friendly. Restaurant food was better than expected but quite pricey with so-so service; we usually chose to eat in town. Overall we would choose to stay here again and were happy with our time there.
The perfect location!

Like most of the Tortugueiro Lodges Mawamba is a quite big, resort-style lodge, a well-oiled machine. Nevertheless they have a wonderful garden and set-up, the rooms are good (a bit noisy because of the thin walls) and the service is great. Activities are well organized and communication is perfect. The big advantage of this lodge is the location, inbetween the Carribean sea (1 min. walk) and the channel (bordering). The walk to Tortugueiro village takes about 10 min. (recomended). On the plot of the lodge we saw many big iguanas, a sloth, toucans, green maccaws and red-eyed tree frogs. At about 100 metres from our room a sea turtle came to lay eggs at night on the beach. We had a wonderful and very experienced guide called Laura, a master in environmental studies. She did a great job and was very communicative to the kids as well. People like Laura know what they're talking about and are deeply engaged in conservation.

We had a wonderful stay!! I want to go back to Tortuguero and Mawamba. This is a beautiful hotel, with very attentive staff. Remember, it is a rustic place in the jungle. Please do not handle the frogs as they will die if you have anything on your hands such as soap or lotions. Also, respect the guides, if you go on a turtle tour, this is nature and you can't expect to see something every time. We were on a tour with some extremely rude people that disrespected our tour guide. Be patient and know this is a jungle and you can't demand to have everything you want all the time. This is a beautiful and precious place.
