I loved it...
The SOV Resort was almost everything that I dreamed it would be. The staff was flexible, friendly and accommodating. They answered questions and ensured that we were ok every step of the way. The food, the ambiance and the view were all spectacular. We had to change our check-in date and got in late. However, the entire process was painless and the young lady on the phone was very understanding and accommodating. When we got in, we had to sanitize and all that before being able to check-in. The check-in process was a breeze which I appreciated. The room and the bathroom were spotless, the AC unit was on point and breakfast was perfect. Everything about my experience at the SOV was perfect. It was centrally located to the town of Negril and really catered to a quiet, low-key weekend which is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Mr. Gordon and the team.
The Sov could be Incredible with a little TLC
Despite the place looking deserted we wandered into The Sov to enquire about dinner; we also got a tour of some of their rooms. We later had a wonderful meal in their restaurant. All of the staff at the Sov were extremely friendly, helpful and naturally engaging. Our meal was amazing and we met the highly talented young chef who has a fabulous way with flavour profiles and the lightness of touch to cook seafood perfectly. We will certainly eat there again when next in Negril. We also really liked the rooms, which were so much better than that we were staying at in the nearby Rockhouse. The new owners have clearly spent a huge amount of money renovating the property prior to opening in 2018, unfortunately it seems that they only did 95% of the work and the incomplete 5% really stood out against the high standards of the completed 95%. Worst of all is the lack of maintenance which threatens to undo and waste the cash already sunk into the place. Missing lightbulbs, unkept grounds, paint that needs touching up, letters missing from the sign on the outside wall etc really give the place an unwelcoming feel. I know that first seasons in a competitive market like Negril are tough and to have to complete in your second season against well established and well-known neighbours during COVID-19 must be even tougher. I want to stay here, but will only do so once maintenance and upkeep match the quality of the staff and the food. I really hope that they make it as The Sov has the potential to be incredible
Great Getaway at Sov
My stay at the Sov Resorts was pleasant, the location overlooking cliffs was breathtaking, good backdrop for photos. The room and bathroom were clean, I met one of the cleaners who delighted in explaining to me how thoroughly she cleaned the room. Breakfast was good, the server was so polite.
Nightmare at The Sov
So a group of 4 travelled from Kingston to this "resort" to spend the weekend, we had called while we were en route to let the manager know that we were nearby. On the phone he confirmed that all was well with the reservation but could not place us in adjoining rooms because the hotel was "packed with AMERICANS". Upon arrival the first the we noticed were two beds (just the base) out in the yard that seem to be drying. we made our way to what was labelled "receptionist" to find the place musty, dark and unmanned. We had to call after waiting for a bit to get the manager to come up. He the proceeded to "check us in" but asked us to wait on the rain to stop before walking to our rooms....... guys we waited for over an hour and no one came to show us the rooms. all this while we could she shabbily dressed people rushing to and fro with sheets, power drills, cholrine powder and all sort of other things which gave us the impression they were just now preparing the room. While waiting four other person showed up to be told the same thing..... only ONE room available and that room had someone removed from it that morning by the ministry of health... this was to give us the impression the person had COVID 19. Yes in the mids of the pandemic Gordon, the manager used fear tactic to encourage us to change the date and come another time. While waiting we had walked around the property and found it to be dirty and unkempt. the pool was downright filty, cobwebs were in the ceiling. the furniture in the lobby was musty. it was bad. In the end the 8 of us who were stranded in the lobby found a beautiful little place name Kaiser down the road and stayed there for the weekend. We are now going to try and get our refund from the HORRIBLE The Sov.
Great room size but the pool and ocean view are amazing
I stayed at The Sov for a weekend. It has great space for a small property with extra large guest rooms. It has a small staff compliment, and is a quiet property. it has a large swimming pool, which we had to ourselves, and the pool faces the ocean. If you are a great swimmer, you can go snorkeling right off the property. There is however no beach as the property is bordered by rocks leading to the sea. They have a three step ladder to the beautiful blue water. It felt like I was at a private home because even though the property was full on my visit, only a few persons were out and about. There is a restaurant where meals can be prepared to order, otherwise you can walk to multiple restaurants in the area or go into the town centre. I would definitely visit again.
