Long weekend

Reviewed 22 november, 2022

Just returned from a four night break at the Royal hotel, we had a nice sea view room with a very spacious shower and plenty of hot water, the bed was a little uncomfortable with the mattress having seen better days but the room was clean and warm. Since our last trip in the summer they have introduced a serve yourself breakfast at the weekend which we definitely weren’t a fan of, the food was barely warm and just not appetising and no choice of anything but fried eggs. Not a good idea in our opinion. Monday was back to served breakfast and it was good. Just as an aside, please get some decent toasters, although I asked for extra toasted toast we still got what is basically warm bread! We ate in the restaurant each night and the service and food was excellent. The staff in this hotel are all absolutely fantastic, friendly, polite and very welcoming. We will definitely be returning to the Royal in the near future. I just hope they scrap the self service weekend breakfast.

Thoroughly disappointed..........akin to 1* accommodation!

Reviewed 20 november, 2022

We initially viewed the Royal Hotel on driving along the sea front and were hugely impressed with what we saw in regard to the size and exterior of the building and its location. Unfortunately, everything went down hill fast once we had checked in to the hotel! The room we were allocated was very basic and lacked any of the 'basics' that one might expect to have in a 3* Hotel. The basin in the bathroom was blocked so did not drain properly. We were disappointed to see 2 narrow single beds whereas we had booked a double room. The duvets on the beds were too small so when pulled up only covered your waist. Worse was to come when my partner (who had stayed in the room whilst I attended a function in the town) attempted to go to sleep but the noise from the rowdy pub opposite the front entrance to the hotel (barely 30 yards away) carried on until after 1am in the morning making sleep impossible. I returned from my function to find the hotel door locked and despite ringing the bell numerous times no one answered. After 30 minutes of immense frustration the night porter eventually arrived to open the door informing me he had been on the loo! Perhaps the biggest disaster was however the Breakfast Buffet. A buffet is hardly the correct description for the meagre rations that were presented. The hot plates include no bacon, one fried egg, mushrooms that looked like they had been there for days and half cooked sausages, black on one side and raw on the other. I asked where was the toast only to be told 'you have to order it' I duly ordered brown toast and received white! The one sachet of marmalade on offer was quickly taken by another guest. The Dining Room is hardly a pleasant experience, dark wooden tables, no table clothes, no servettes, not even paper ones and guests dirty plates strewn around on the adjoining tables. Breakfast time was stated to be 8am till 10am but at 9.50am the staff quickly took away the very meagre rations that were left. What promised much from the outside turned out to be a huge disappointment. The Royal Hotel cannot in its wildest dreams be described as a 3* establishment, I have stayed in far superior 1* hotels! If you are considering staying in Weston-super-Mare avoid this Hotel at all costs it is way below par.

Fab Food

Reviewed 14 november, 2022

We visited the restaurant, we would have given 5 stars apart but the manager tried to palm us off with 3/4 bottle of wine...it was most odd, the food (steaks) was bang on, a shout out to the chef, extremely nice. The service was great, things were going so well until we ordered a 2nd bottle of merlot, the manager brought it in a cooler, how odd I said to her, when I took the wine out it was sealed but only 3/4 full, we called her back she apologized sort of smirked at us which made us think she had done this in purpose. We believed she brought red wine in a cooler to hide the fact it was only 3/4 full. The wine was replaced but a very strange experience.

Nice meal prior to theatre

Popped in to the royal on a Wed evening prior to going to the Playhouse. Bar staff really friendly and went above and beyond to assist us. We both had burgers, really nice apart from my bread disintegrated at the bottom but I am jinxed with burger rolls. Tasty burger and lovely red wine. We will def eat here again.
