In 1385, the future King of Portugal won a decisive victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota, consolidating the Portuguese nation against the Castilian armies. In honour of his victory, he erected the Batalha Monastery near the site of his triumph.


Some seven centuries later, the monastery that was entrusted to the hands of the Dominicans now contains the most important core of Portuguese Medieval stained glass.
