Stayed here for 3 nights with friends. Bed comfortable, linen clean, fridge works, pool large and clean, restaurant food good and priced ok. The place does need a clean but for the low price it was ok. If you want 4 or 5 star the stay elsewhere. Quiet location.
Avoid Disappointment - Book somewhere else!!

Just spent three nights/four days at the Rainbow Resort in Phen, Udon Thani Province. Booked a Villa via Agoda for three nights, accommodation only at 2,850 Baht for the three night stay, no particularly high expectations of the place prior to arrival as was quite cheap for the three nights.
First the positives, nice quiet location, has onsite restaurant and a swimming pool.
The accommodation was in a villa as advertised, first impressions were that the outside was in need of a lot of maintenance and a coat of paint, outside lights looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned for years.
Inside a single room with adjoining shower room, both were filthy dirty and the floor covered in dead insects and creepy crawlies, the shower room was extremely small and quite dangerous to negotiate with raised steps to and from the shower basin, the walls were covered in dirty hand prints, the top surface of the electric shower was covered with about 5 millimetres of dirt and dust, no running water at the sink and the facets both sink and shower looked as if they’d never been cleaned. The on-site staff did rectify the lack of running water to the sink/hand basin but not until 24 hours after we reported the problem
The main bedroom area contained table and stools, a fridge, TV and aircon unit, the aircon was stuck at 18 degrees so was like living in a refrigerated cold store, the aircon remote was broken and although the resort changed the remote we were still unable to alter the temperature control, I’m guessing the regulator unit in the aircon unit was broken.
The fridge worked but was a health hazard encrusted with dead ants and mild around the door seal, the table and chairs were covered in dust.
Agoda stated that the staff speak English?? Really I wish they’d have let me know who they’d actually spoken to. As we couldn’t find anyone who understood anything other than their own native language which whilst may be understandable doesn’t help when you do not fully converse in Thai.
The on-site restaurant, good selection of Thai food/Pizzas at reasonable prices, but extremely poor in quality and invariably on the occasions we ate their the food arrived cold.
Nice swimming pool complex.
The main reception was filthy, tiled floors covered in muddy footmarks, it should really have been an indication as to what to expect but it didn’t go anywhere near.
So avoid disappointment and book somewhere else, I’ve stopped in some really horrible places but this place tops the list of never agains
An oasis in te desert, nice pool.

This hotel is a bit of a find, rooms are just ok but lovely pool area, good food and nice staff. This hotel is very close to Pen (Phen) about 35 minutes from Udon City. A great place to just chill out and they also rented me a scooter, they are like most Thai's and have a "can do" attitude.
Nice resort in this small market town

We stayed here for a week while visiting family having used the pool on a previous trip (50 Baht/person for non-guests). The bungalows with AC are large and comfortable and great value at only 500 Baht/night. Normal rooms ok too (we looked).
Location is a bit out of town, and this is no tourist area so don't expect much taxi service. Car rental recommended. The town Phen is nice enough and there is a coffee shop on the road into town, another coffee shop, at least one more restaurant, a market, shops, 7-11, Tesco and ATMs. It's a 40 minute drive to Nong Khai and similar to Udon Thani. Of course there are some temples within driving distance too.
If you've only stayed in the tourist spots you might find the accommodation a bit basic, but it had everything we needed and a heated shower (don't expect much heat/pressure, but it's not needed). There's a food menu and room service - we didn't eat here, mostly because of visiting family and seeking out fresh cappuccino, but it looked ok.
The pool is nice, with a paddling pool section, slide in the main pool and a small shop/cafe.
No real faults, maybe some resorts have prettier gardens but really it's good, simple accommodation and service for a great price.
