I was told it would be fragrance-free and it wasn't

When I stay at hotels, I always call ahead to request a room that is not cleaned with fragrances before my arrival as I cannot abide those odors. I asked the reservations clerk at Shinola if fragranced products were used and I was told no. When I showed up at my room, it smelled as though it had just been cleaned, and with very fragranced products. I should have gone to request a room change, but I didn't think any of the rooms would be any different, so I didn't request a change. I took a washcloth, wet it down, and went over the floors and surfaces to try to remove the smell. I was surprised that the washcloth picked up a lot of dirt and dust. So it was not well cleaned, but it was cleaned with toxic fragrances. I left with a headache and nasal congestion. The reservations clerk should know the correct answers to questions and such an expensive hotel, and accommodations should be made for guests who request them. Better yet, Shinola should not be cleaning with toxic, fragranced products. There is not need for synthetic smells in order for a place to be clean.

Loved the mid-century modern décor. Stayed in a Gallery Suite which was terrific. Lots of large windows, auto blinds, great views. Excellent service, and good location.
Although the block next door is under construction, wasn’t a problem for us. Room well insulated,so weren’t bothered by noise (except for motorcycles at night).
Ford Museum 30 min drive away and should not be missed, especially the Rouge Factory tour, and racetrack simulator.
Nice - but spring for the bigger room

5 stars for ambience, decor, service, good stuff in the (expensive - 6 dollars for a 30c La Croix, but whatever) mini bar.
Very nice restaurants downstairs.
Points off for the room - it was TINY so not great for a business traveler. No desk. Hard to work sitting on the bed. There was a chair, but no table. Ugh.
Also no bathtub which is a new hotel trend which makes me nuts.
Not sure what was going on, but there was a strange lack of towels. No towels when I got there, had to ask. The second day, they removed the used towels and didn't replace them. So, maybe a one off issue with housekeeping, but annoying.
Nice hotel/experience overall, got a downgraded room

My husband and I booked for three nights at the Shinola Hotel in a Den King room through Hotels.com. We understand each room is unique at the hotel. However, based on Hotels.com site and the Shinola hotel site, we did not get what we paid for. The booking stated a room with a separate sitting area and a desk- and the pictures on Hotels.com matched this description. There were also similar pictures on the hotel website. Unfortunately when we got to the room these features were not there. There was stains on the carpet and a hole in one of our towels. The hotel said that all rooms are unique and they could not do anything to give us a room with the features we referenced until the third night of our stay. They comped our parking, which was nice, and upgraded our room the last night. Unfortunately we were not able to get much of the benefit of enjoying time in the room by that point. When we checked out they did not comp our parking on the bill and we had to go back to rectify things. I understand if there are no rooms then there are no rooms. It was frustrating because it was misleading advertising on Hotels.com and on the Shinola site. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant San Morello and drinks at the hotel bar called Evening Bar. Ideally the hotel could have given us something knowing we were patronizing these establishments. These are treated as separate businesses. We also had room service our last night and bought things at the Shinola store.
The restaurant, bar, room service, and store were nice experiences. The management left us with a bad feeling over this visit and room situation.
