Just Okay
The town that hosts the Svevo is practically dead. I can't imagine the actual need to have a hotel here, although somebody told me that military training camps are found in the area. The hotel itself simply serves its purpose. It is clean and the service is good. So are breakfast and meals. The decor and furniture seem a bit tired and are struggling to keep at pace with the times. Bathroom faucets have lost their shine and the shower is more of a erratic water stream rather than a shower. The cubicle was falling apart. Wifi on the otherhand isn't bad. If its just a basic lodging you're after most probably the Svevo is your only choice. Its basic but clean and the service is good.
Standard hotel
Stayed two nights in the Hotel Svevo in Gioia del Colle. Reasonably priced, clean, off street parking, breakfast included, it is a perfectly acceptable hotel. Our room was smallish, but good enough. Wifi was adequate.
Typical Modern Italian Hotel
Hotel Svevo is a typical modern Italian hotel of a decent size in Gioia del Colle. The rooms are fairly small and a bit starkly white but comfortably furnished and with the usual hard floors. The room was hot for a Winter night stay and the air conditioning control was ineffective in reducing the temperature. Fortunately my room was at the back of the hotel with a view over open country so I could open the window to let in cool air. It was quiet until early in the morning when there was some noise from electrical machinery outside. The bathroom had a reasonable shower and bidet. There was reasonable selection of cold foods for breakfast. I did not eat in the restaurant for dinner – my colleague reported that there was a limited choice set menu available. There are some restaurants in the town centre which is about 15 minutes walk from the hotel and a couple of modern bars and restaurants near to the hotel. The management were obliging in arranging an additional room for a colleague at short notice, despite being fully-booked - they were quite happy to move rooms if required but in the end it all worked out well.
Italian trip
We stayed at this hotel for a spell 20 years ago and pleased to find it has survived and is obviously thriving , refurbished and that the area relatively unchanged. Gioia del Colle is not a tourist destination itself although a friendly Italian town which is near several other interesting tourist sites in this part of Southern Italy. Functions for passing tourists , business stays , etc. Handy for exit off A14 and walking distance from town centre and variety of Italian restaurants , bars, shops although quite modest but good value. We got to know area quite well before so knew how to get about but anyone passing might struggle unless you know where to go and if driving in town easy to go around in circles and parking nearly impossible . Better to park at hotel and walk in if you wish to visit. Staff friendly and helpful and also some speak good English which helped us. No real obvious porter facilities but we were happy to move our own luggage . Could have had some more hotel amenity and local information ( map etc) information in room ( as would certainly help any passing tourist or business person)and no tea / coffee facilities ( but not uncommon in other hotels we have stayed in in Italy) Restaurant- excellent evening meal and very good value. Quite quiet when we were staying this time but does host events and visiting parties including military links ( nearby Italian/NATO air force base- our link) . Good if looking for somewhere at good price and if visiting some local tourist attractions or on local business or travelling through this part Italy. We would stay here again.
Not fantastic but good enough...
I stayed for a week, and to be fair it's not a great hotel but anyway is a good deal. The staff is kind and efficient, however, we had to call them to often to be served at the bar, this is not good for business... Had a fine meal at the hotel restaurant, but we found better outside and for less... There's a lot of room for improvement and renovations, but if if visiting Goia del Colle it's place I would go again...
